Looking fo Purchase Advice XF 2011 v 2012
I am new to posting on this forum, but have appreciated all the collective (and civil) wisdom dispensed. Hope to obtain some personally during my XF purchase.
With the imminent arrival of the 2013 XF, I notice some dealerships still have stock of new 2011s. While I appreciate the style change for 2012, the economics of a 2011 are compelling.
So a couple of questions:
1. I understand the changes in warranty since 2011. However, if a 2011 has remained in dealer stock and not been titled, does the purchase in 2012 start the 2011 warranty (all inclusive).? There was a previous post that indicated 2011 warranties commenced at some point, whether they were in dealer stock or not.
2. Forum postings earlier this year seemed to indicate a 20% "discount" off MSRP was not out of line for new 2011 purchases in 2012. With the 2013 models approaching, any thoughts as to appropriate discounts for two model years? I recognize each dealer has different circumstances and negotiations vary (YMMV comes to mine), but used car and mileage guidelines are not very helpful for this type of negotiation.
Thank you in advance for your advice.

Welcome to the forum!
1. My experience having just purchased an '11 about a month or so ago: Was told that all 2011 warranties would have started by end of Feb. 2012 or sooner, even for those untitled cars in dealer stock. It was explained to me that dealers must purchase the cars from Jaguar so the books can be cleared. Additional discounts are given to dealer when warranties are started (I think this can happen at various times after the model year ends). If you make a few inquires at dealers that may have them left you can find out. Ask to confirm the mileage on the car. Also, if you are shopping via cars.com or other sites, my experience was that what appeared to be a new 2011 ended up having some amount of miles on it up into the thousands or was sold and still advertised (I think to attract business?). There was a SC that had it wheels switched out for 19's instead of 20's, the replacement cost to get back to orignial was about $3.5k., so make sure your car has not modified as value may be reduced.
2. The 20% was a good number for 2011's, but some here have gotten 2012's with a sizeable discount. If a dealer does not have '11's but has new '12's, I would expect they would deal the '12's to sell them. My experience was that different dealers have different dealing points depending on their needs to sell at the moment. I don't know but I have a suspicion that there is a cap on the discount, before the car is made a demo or gets miles put on it. Has anyone seen a new car discounted more than 20% or so? I would go for '12's if you can swing it as your choices are greater. Let us know what you discover. Hunting is almost more fun than buying.

Appreciate the help Jacuny. If a car is used as a loaner, then it becomes a used car and is no longer considered inventory?
One of my reasons for a 2011 model is the total maintenance coverage. Am I overvaluing this? It seemed to be cover about $4-5,000 in costs otherwise on me. Not a deal killer but certainly nice not to pay.

It really boils down to what's most important to you. The styling or the warranty. I did think of getting a 2011 also for the warranty but really fell for the styling of the 2012. I didn't get quite the 20% discount but did get close to it for a "USED" car with 282 miles on it. And with the release of the 2013's around the corner I suspect you can get that and maybe something even better. But it did take a lot of patience and in the end I had to travel to get the car. It does depend on the dealership as none close to me we're willing to give me anything close to the deal I received. Happy hunting!

That said, when I was looking my dealership offered me a $56,800 2011 XF Luxury for $43,700, so about 24% off. The warranty is very nice on the '11 models too, with all maintenance included, so over 5 years if yours putting 15k miles on a year, I would say that would sum to $5-7k in savings.
I would go with the 2011, but that's just me. You must do what is best for you.

I know there isn't a right or wrong way to go as far as styling. I actually fell for the car before the facelift. I'm just saying that would be the one defining reason as to get a 2012 over the 2011. The warranty of the earlier models make that a no brainier. The new front, the speedier head unit(though not by much, lol), and the revised taillights would've the only reason anyone would choose the '12. And that's what I chose. I didn't get as much off as you ($10,500 off my car was more like 17%) but he could possibly get something similar when the '13's start rolling off the lines here shortly.
