Default My first Jag: XF 2.7D or 3.0D ?

Hi guys,

as all of you have more experience with Jag than me, I would really appreciate your opinion.

I need to decide between 2 models:
- Jaguar XF 3.0D S V6 Portfolio; 275hp; 05/2009; 193 000 km
- JAGUAR XF 2.7 D V6 Premium Luxury; 207hp; 02/2009; 73 000km

Both are the same price, difference are the km's and horse power of course. Let's pretend they are both in a condition relevant to their km's...

I don't "need" the 275hp, this is not my main driver, although, if you believe that there is no much difference between the service costs of those 2 (considering the more than 2,5x more km's), I would surely love to squeeze the extra 70hp sometimes from the 3.0D.

Which would you take?

More questions:
- is one of them more reliable ?
- what to be cautious and look for when testing the cars, what are the problematic spots ?
- what could be the expected service costs for such a car in it's age / year ?
- any other advice ?

I'm looking forward for my dream come true
Thanks in advance for your advice !

On spec I'd go with the 3.0D for the additional power. But - is that correct that it has 193,000 km?? If so (and not a typo) I wouldn't buy an XF with that sort of mileage. Even though reliability is pretty good, repairs are expensive - and you are getting into some pretty heavy wear and tear repairs at that sort of mileage. Just my own opinion - I'd go much lower mileage if you can. How much more cash for a 3.0D with a less astronomical mileage?

Yes, 193,000 km is right. When I look at the market, than the average for an 2008-2009 XF is about 150.000 km, so this one is higher, but not that much. On the other hand 73.000 km is very low. If you thinks that 193.000 km is just to risky because of the service fee - compared to the less driven car, I may perhaps go for it.
But again, 73.000 km is so low, that I'm wondering if somebody was not playing with the milage on that piece :-/

Welcome to the forum Peter,

I know from other members in your part of Europe (the Mod Team can see your exact location) that Jaguars aren't exactly a common sight so finding a used one becomes more difficult than it is in UK or US.

Although high mileage on a Jaguar wouldn't necessarily worry me, the one with 120K miles (193Km) is likely to have 'tired' transmission and suspension which could lead to some very expensive refurbishment costs.

With any Jaguar, service history is critical. Do they both have complete Jaguar Dealer history for service / warranty / accident repairs?

Maintenance costs are going to be a major consideration. Even if you do your own work, parts will have to be sourced from western Europe. When assessing the two cars, remember Jaguar trim is high cost. If there's any needs replacing, this should be factored into the purchase price.

I suggest you post some photos so members with the same model can give a better opinion on condition.

Good luck - I hope one of them checks out OK for you.

Graham

Hi Graham,

thanks for the welcome and quick post. You are very right, here in the Central Europe the Jaguars are quite rare and you don't see even an XF every day. It's good, because you can enjoy more of this "special" feeling you have inside of such car, but on the other hand, there is only a hand full of 2.7 - 3.0 D XF's being sold here right now, so there is not much to choose from.

I need to travel from 100-2500 km to see this 2 cars, but based on the description, they do both have a service book and service history. Both cars were imported, the 2.7 from Germany.

Do you think, that it's possible to tweak with the mileage on this car, is it possible to find out anyhow? Still the 73.000 km is very rare for a 2009 Diesel XF.

On the pictures they both look very well, no scratches and even the engine is well washed and looks as new.

Thanks

How hard is it to import to your country (you're in the EU I think so presumably not too tough?) You may find it preferable to look internationally in a country with much more availability (at lower mileages) and perhaps justify a trip out to see 5-6 options and buy/import one? Or is it a costly import?

Yes, I'm in EU, so it's not a big deal to import a car. However it's better to use services of companies which do that as their core business, because there is a lot of bureaucracy. The cost for the import of such car would be about 2.000,- Eur.

Searching on autoscout 24 (one of the biggest EU car search engines) gives me from A LOT of Jag XF's only 8x in the EU which are bellow 100.000 km and bellow 20.000,- Eur.
Angebote

Just to clarify, the 2.7 D offered here is for app 19.000,- Eur and 73.000 km which seems to be a really good deal if the mileage is right and not tweaked. I know that it's unfortunately a common practice to turn back the mileage with many cars, but I have no clue if it's possible (not hard) with the XF, which actually should have the service history in service book.
So the local buy seems to be a good deal. But could the service history be anyhow verified, could the mileage be anyhow checked? I just can't believe that I could be that happy having the car already in front of my nose
