Default Need help: coolant light on, coolant level is fine

Had to pull over because the "Warning: Coolant level low" light was flashing, but the level was above the minimum line when I stopped. I had to grab an uber to a meeting so I don't know how the level is now that the engine is cooler.

Two points: I've already replaced two water pumps within the last year.

The "trunk open" warning was also flashing on at the same time, but the trunk was shut.

I'd prefer to drive instead of towing it and having it in for the weekend, but there's no temperature gauge to determine if the engine is too hot (which is dumb).

Any ideas? Thermostat? Level indicator?

THANK YOU.

It's the float. You can buy a new coolant tank on eBay. Or do what I did, take needle nose pliers and pull the float out and I used a piece of rubber, make sure it floats. I cut o hole in it to match the pole. Put in under the original float put stem back in and your done. Your not over heating. And just to rule out anything else. Push the float down with a coat hanger, I bet it's on the bottom already.

I have the same issue right now. I hate seeing that damn light pop on and off. I was hoping I could yank the float out and fix it. I'll have to give it a try shortly.

The float is bigger than the fill hole. i.e. the float was put in and the two halves were glued together. I can't figure out how it could come out.... It is also very difficult to work on the float, it's like a particularly tortuous form of keyhole surgery. I have the same issue and the float is currently wired in the 'up' position. I plan to buy a new tank, but was quoted $212 for the tank, by the dealer. The SC is slightly different to the NA and I haven't found a cheaper option for the SC on ebay yet.

Reset the float, and reboot the car.

If the float doesn't float rebooting the car isn't going to do anything.

I pulled the float out of my tank yesterday. For the moment I removed the sensor from the tank and taped the float to the sensor to eliminate the light. I'll have to either find another float or something I can stick on the shaft under the float that will lift the float up with the coolant level.

See the picture attached. The black plastic piece is the top that snaps onto the top of the shaft and keeps the float from floating away. The orange doughnut is the float.

I said that? The comma in this case denotes a sequence. Sooo "Reset the float",then, "re boot the car". If the first part is null there's no second part.LOL

Could you make a new float?

No, they will not sell the float separate. I used a piece of foam and put under the dead float.

Thank you all for your replies and descriptions.

How do I access the float? I've looked in the reservoir, but didn't see it (though it was a quick look).

I still have plenty of fluid in the tank.

Take the coolant tank cap off (when cool). The float is directly below the cap a few inches. Get a light and set it against the bottom of the tank so it shines up into the tank.

Ok, so how did you get that black retaining piece off of the float stem? Mine seemed like it was well stuck on there....

That black piece pulled up and over those snaps. You'll need something long enough to hook under it and pull up. I didn't have to use much force. Then I had to fish the float out.
