Default Now I have the glass rattle...

Hey guys,
Everybody who owns an XF has those annoying rattles coming from the sunroof area. I sprayed silicone spray onto a rag and applied it to the entire rubber seal. Good news is that the creaking noise went away. Bad news is the glass from the sunroof is rattling. Is everybody having the actual glass rattle? It sounds like a vibration from the glass possibly being loose. I'm going to experiment driving and tilting the roof when I hear the glass rattle.

Mine never rattles. The height is adjustable. Is your roof flush with the steel part?

How is it adjustable? Is this something that needs to be done by the dealer? From the inside, I can push up on the glass and it slightly moves up. By looking at the roof, it looks flush. The replaced some clips a while ago, I wonder if they adjusted the height of the glass?

Sunroof glass should not move. There are four adjustment points with locking screws to allow alignment of the panel with the steel roof. Mine needed doing twice before it was acceptable to me. Maybe there is some play in yours that needs to be taken out.

This has just started happening on my XFR! It is only apparent at highway speeds and it is rattling clearly from two points around the sunroof. If I tilt or slide the roof even a little, it immediately stops. If I apply just a little bit of upward pressure with one finger, it stops too. Hoping that Jag have an easy fix for this as it is very irritating!

Let me know if you can get this issue resolved. I'm so sick of bringing my car in that I want to know what the techs need to do, so they can't mess around.

As all XF owners, I too have had this issue. I took the car in a number of times to the dealer. They fixed the rattle, but it always came back. I finally had the dealer remove the entire headliner and make sure everything was secure. Since then I have had no rattles!!!

to elaborate on this there are 2 issues with the XF for sunroof/headliner rattles. 1st generation headliner retainers where they attach around the opening(replace with new style clips that fit tightly)
And 2 bolts that either fall out or are loose that hold the sunroof frame to the roof. Most often the front ones. Ive even had them rolling around in the headliner once they fell out.

I was told that they have to replace the headliner clips to improve the clearance (the tech didn't elaborate further) which sounds like a way to stop the rattle being apparent, rather than to stop something rattling. Anyway, he said it was an easy fix but they need the car for a day and I am booked in for the first available appointment on 24th January! My dealer has recently combined their Jag and LR service ops - it used to take a few days to get an appointment!

When I brought in mine to complain about the sunroof rattling noise and that the glass was not sutting flush, the guy who checked me in tried to convince me it was caused by me, stating (and I am not joking here) "that happens if someone stands on it". Once he saw my reaction to that, he realized how stupid he sounded. The service advisor took over and promptly fixed it (some clips came loose).

My rattle appears to have been fixed - as stated previously, it is something to do with the headliner, apparently, although I suspect that my sunroof is now "flusher" than it was before so they may have done something else.

I have an earlier XF (build date 1/2008). My sunroof was low in the front when closed. I pulled out the center maplight deal and a 6mm(ish) bolt fell out. So I guess I need to pull the headliner to fix the sunroof, correct? I'm guessing under the headliner this is one of the bolts that screws the sunroof "cassette" to the roof?

I tried to find the four bolts on the sides shown in the 2010 shop manual and that are described by guys here but I couldn't find them in my roof.

I had a sunroof

bolt fall off and rattle in the map/dome light for a year now. Finally figured out how to pop if off and get the damn bolt out. My left sunroof side is sagging and has play so I suppose this bolt came from over there but can’t see where and don’t really want to take headliner off more and break clips. We very rarely use sunroof so I’ll stick a piece of styrofoam in the corner to level the glass and call it a day .

also did silicone around the whole outside rubber seal of the sunroof and that stoped the creaking noise.

So nice to have a rattle/squeak free XFR again! So glad I found this thread.
