You don't state what engine you have but for the 4.2 Ltr engine a quality 5w30 synthetic would probably be best for your area. For a 5.0 Ltr engine it is a little different. Jaguar recommends that only a specific oil be used. Castrol SLX Professional OE 5w20 now known by the new name, Castrol Edge Professional OE 5w20. This oil will have "Specially engineered for Jaguar and Land Rover" on the bottle. As of now this Castrol OE oil can only be purchased from a Jaguar or Land Rover dealer. The price from the dealer should be in the 10.00 qt (+/-) range, competitive with most other high quality full synthetic oils.

Castrol Edge is the old Castrol Syntec but in a new lower friction formula with a fancy new name. Even Castrol says so on TV.
Jaguar does recommend full synthetic in the 5.0. Low viscosity is essential in these new engines. I think 0W20 or 5W20 is specified for the 5.0.
The 4.2 was designed so long ago any oil of the correct viscosity will work. Jaguar specifies 5W30.
Full synthetic oil is so superior to conventional oil every Jaguar should use it.

Castrol Edge Professional OE is different from Castrol Edge Syntec or Titanium branded oil. Don't know why they have to make the branding so confusing but Pro OE is the only oil to meet the
Ford WSS-M2C925A standard listed in the Jaguar owners manual for the 5.0 Ltr
I'm sure other oils will not lock up and melt down a Jag 5 Ltr engine but with price being in the same range, why not get the correct spec oil recommended by Jaguar. Your warranty may depend on it
From a Jaguar Training Bulletin:
Jaguar and Castrol - two legendary English companies - have teamed up to develop a new 5W-20 synthetic motor oil which enables the AJ-V8 Gen III 5.0L engine to achieve high horsepower and torque without impacting fuel economy. Previously oil changes were required every 10,000 miles. Now that has been extended to 15,000 miles or 1 year, whichever comes first. The new oil, Castrol Edge Professional OE FuelSaver SLX A1 5W-20, is exclusive to and must be used in the new 5.0L AJ V8 engines.
Benefits of this new oil include:
· Stable viscosity for sustainable performance
· Improved engine cleanliness and engine protection
· Better ability to compensate for various driving styles
There are several features your new Jaguar customers should know about:
· The new Castrol oil, EDGE PROFESSIONAL OE 5W-20, is the only oil recommended for the new 5.0L AJ V8 engines
· A service reminder in the Message Center lets the driver know when it's time to change oil
· Service Interval is every 15,000 miles or 12 months, whichever occurs first. It's important that your customers visit your Jaguar dealership yearly for annual service
· The first scheduled maintenance service visit is Complimentary
· Maintenance Interval Message automatically appears when it's time for service
· Checking the oil level is simple using the built-in "digital dipstick" on the car's onboard computer. The new engine does not have a traditional dipstick
The Jaguar/Castrol co-engineered 5.0L engine 5W-20 synthetic motor oil is the only lubricant completely tested to be compatible with Jaguar’s new engine components and other fluids and sealants. No substitutions should be made as the warranty coverage requires the use of the proper Jaguar specified lubricant.

Jaguar recommends Castrol only because it has a marketing agreement with them right now. Same with BMW. Not too long ago it was Mobil1 and at one time it was Quaker State. Remember Group 44?. Any SAE 5W-20 synthetic oil will work fine in your Jaguar. Probably, the top of the line oil out there is Red Line, but again, any over the counter synthetic SAE 5W-20 will be fine if you are planning on changing your own oil and sticking to the manufacturer's oil change intervals or better. This probably goes without saying, but always change the oil filter when you change the oil.

SAE 5W20 is not quite the full Jaguar warranty specification and readers should be aware of that while making a choice.

If we get back to the original question... You have to use a synthetic and it has to be SAE spec 5W 20. Any other question as to if you have to use some obscure manufacturer specification becomes moot with the Magnusson-Moss Warranty Act. See the discussion in a previous post.
