Oil check on 09 xfsc

I noticed the 09 xfsc still has a dipstick (lucky me) but I have been reading and researching the car and a lot of xf owners say it needs to be checked while running? Not cold? But is that for people who have the dipstick or the digital gauge version? Thx guys, getting ready to change mine so just wondering. 👍

For all Jags with the digital oil level readout the Owner's Handbook says to run the engine for at least 10 minutes then shut it down then check the oil level.
The idea is to give it 10 minutes for the warm oil to settle back down in the sump so you get an accurate reading.
If it's been less than 10 minutes since you last shut the engine down the digital gauge method won't work, it will simply say "not available check handbook".
But if it's been a while since you started the engine, for example left overnight in your garage, the reading will work straight away as long as you just turn the ignition on and do not start the engine.

Bzzzz, wrong!
Run the engine until warm, then shut it down and wait for 10 minutes, then check the oil level!

The 08-09 4.2 has the regular dip stick, which is yet another plus for this engine. It is checked cold the same as any non-fancy motor going back a century.
Checking while warm might be what OP read about dry sump engines, but the XF is a regular wet sump. More details in the owners manual for regular maintenance tasks.
