Default Overhead console removal

I'd like to wire in my V1 radar detector to a live feed in the overhead console. Does anyone know how to remove the console to allow access to the wiring? My car is an 2012 XF S/C (don't know if that matters) and it looks like the console recesses into the headlining. I can't see any obvious access points and I don't want to bugger up the console or the headlining.

I did see some posts for other installs but it wasn't clear (at least to me) where I should lever, and how far.

Thanks in advance.

I hard wired my Escort Redline, Escort Live module, and external Escort speaker and posted some pix on here somewhere. It was REALLY easy to do.

Thanks for the info. I did see those pictures when I was researching the issue. My issue was how to remove the overhead console without breaking something. I'm going to try the "large paperclip" solution to see if that works. Do you happen to recall where the locating taps are for the console and if it's just a matter of pulling straight down? I've stripped out lots of trim in the past on various cars, and once I get it apart I usually find out there was a better way based on the location of the tabs.

Don't overthink it. I've pulled it down and put it back up 20 times with a flathead screwdriver and haven't given it so much as a nick. If I remember correctly, the tabs are maybe an inch from the front on each side. Just slide the flathead up between the console and the headliner on one side, making sure the flathead goes more or less straight up and the edge of the flathead is flush against the console, so it doesn't go up at an angle and potentially scratch it. Then, once the flathead is up in there an inch or maybe an inch and a half or so, just gently start to pry the console down by moving the screwdriver handle away from the console. If you're in the right place, that side should then come down a half inch or so when you lever it. If not, readjust by a half inch and repeat. Even if it did scratch anything, which I can't imagine happening, it would be where the edge of the flathead makes contact with the plastic at the very top of the console when you lever it back, which is recessed an inch or so into the roof, so you'd never be able to it see when it's re-installed anyway. Once the first side drops down a tad, just do the exact same thing on the other side (the console will hold itself in place until you do), and then you'll be able to swing the whole console down very easily with your hands. If you're still not comfortable, I can post some pix tonight of me doing it. But, it's extremely easy to do based on what I just wrote.

I agree I'm probably being a bit cautious but I've been bitten before. I did try what you said but I found that the headlining was being compressed by the screwdriver as I pressed in on the console. I tried it with a screwdriver and with some trim tools I have. Nothing seemed willing to move, or felt like it was starting to move, so I stopped. You'll be on my Christmas card list if you could take a couple of pictures showing the place you insert the screwdriver between the headlining and the console. I'd also love a picture of the console showing the retaining clips/mouldings/protrusions if possible.

Thanks again.

Same happened to me. That's why I made the little tools, to be sure I didn't damage the headliner. I was also over cautious, but this worked well. You can't pull on them slowly, they will just bend. Just give them a good yank down and the console will drop down perfectly.

Angry Removing overhead console

Thank you for the pix and instructions. Does anyone know how to fix the annoying rattle from the console once you remove it? Jag Dealer couldn't on try one.

Has anyone documented which plug is best to tap into and which wires(color) can be used for +/-? I will be doing this using a zipcord which you just shove into the corresponding +/- wires in an available plug to grab power.

It's been documented in other related threads on this forum, which is where I initially got the info. And, I recently hardwired my Laser Interceptor Quads using that same information.

See attached picture for recently installed Laser Interceptor switch on overhead console...

I've literally taken the overhead console piece down 30+ times and have never had a rattle. You might want to look to see if any clips were broken, or if anything hard (wiring connectors, etc.) is making contact with something else that could create a rattle, as a result of taking the overhead console down and potentially rearranging anything from the way the car was originally built.

Default wrong source or rattle

I finally figured out that it is not the center console that is causing the rattle but the sunroof head surround. I was fooled because it stopped when I pushed on the console but I was indirectly pushing the head liner up as well.
Any thoughts on a fix? I took it apart and the plastic is not broken, but it seems loose.
Mike
