Is it possible to decode the options from the VIN?
Hi,
I am in the market for a 2011 new or used XF Premium. There's lots for sale in both new and used, but I am running into a problem.
The ads for the car do not clearly list the options that were added above and beyond the standard options of the Premium. The VIN number is almost always accessible, so is there a way to find out the options of the car from VIN, or some other means?
I am also suprised that a lot dealers and some private sellers can't easily answer the question about the options, so asking them is not only tedius and time consuming, but often adds more questions than it answers.
From what I can tell, the options can add about $15K to the MSRP of the Premium, so it's pretty important for me to know what I am buying before I pull the trigger.
Thanks!

Simpliest (IMHO) way to decode all options is to register at TOPIx:
TOPIx - TOPIx
then, to enter VIN into Favourites and you'll get all options decoded...

Ask for a scan of the original window sticker - I think that is the only way to be sure. There may be other data on the car that can decode the options, but in my experience even getting such info from an official dealer can be challenging.
When I was in the market for a 911 (which I nearly always am!) I couldn't believe the number of dealers that would tell me that the options sticker didn't exist (it is clear, in two places on every Porsche - if it isn't there, be suspicious!) or they would give me the wrong info, but I think that is because most salesmen can't be bothered to go and look. Customers for $60k+ cars are queueing at their desks, presumably. On that basis, getting them to wander over to the scanner might be a challenge too...

Jerry99 - that is very good. Looked up my vehicle and it was 100%. Worried that the warranty start date was listed as Dec2010 when my dealer told me as recently as 2 months ago that it was July 2011 when I bought it! Hmmm - missed my first service on the platinum warranty by Jag's records, then...

after registration, you have to log in, then at Home screen you'll see a input field for VIN, press "Find" and after finding look for "more..." in Vehicle features...

The TIPIx is an amazing website! It's definitely what I needed -- thanks!
It could only be better if it grouped the options into the packages that Jaguar uses, but with a little Control-F searching on the page, it's pretty easy to figure out what packages (and therefore the original MSRP) were added to the car.
Just with this reply, this forum has proven amazing!

Yep, I checked it out - the dealer was a little loose with the truth, but I was buying a 4k mile car, so it stood to reason that some of the warranty was already burned. it doesn't matter to me - I won't keep the car beyond 2 yrs anyway. The important thing with the 2011 is the platinum service deal starts when you take delivery, not when the warranty starts.

That's great news, thanks! I wasn't expecting that. My car will have about of year of missing warranty, but with only 50,000 miles of warranty, I would never make it 5 years before I hit the mileage limit.
But it's nice to have the service included.
I will definitely "self-insure" the car after the warranty considering how expensive an extended warranty costs. For $6K, I can get a ton of work done at an independent shop.

Topix
I can’t seem to get any details on options for my vehicle. Just the minor options and some things are listed as “less”. Thanks

that are listed as “less” which I assume are not part of the vehicle. I put the vin in and hit enter but don’t see what you refer to as Favourites. Thx
