Interesting. I believe the engine will stop but the selector will stay in drive until the car is stopped. However, I am not going to try it. Selecting Park while at speed would destroy the gearbox. Probably, you cannot select Park while in motion, but again I am not going to try it.

I do know that a definite push is required on the button, merely touching it accidentally will not do anything.

Here's a stupid answer. Try it! Try it! Just kidding. Well, maybe not. Yah, try it. Then let everyone else know what happens. Does your owner's manual warn against it?

I would bet there must be some fail safe that won't let you engage "stop" while at speed.

I hope the system is smart enough to read the vehicle speed from the ABS sensors and not allow the stop/start button to work until the vehicle is at a complete standstill.

The owner's manual is a tad ambiguous on this point. It tells you not to do this but not why. In one spot it says if the engine is stopped when the vehicle is moving it can be restarted. Maybe Jaguar wants you to keep the engine running for safety: power steering, power brakes. Or maybe the whole transmission blows up when you press that red start button while the engine is running and the car is moving...... after you.

IMO, it would be utter stupid and reprehensible for Jaguar to design such a complicated and intricate computer-controlled system and then overlook a failsafe for such an occurrence.....

...But, I'm not going to test that...;^)

Heck of a question and gives all sorts of ideas as to what might happen, from the sunroof opening and the passenger flying out, to just a general melt down.

But, seriously, how would you guys shut down the engine in an emergency run away type situation, stuck wide open throttle, engine starts to eat its own oil, computer suddenly goes on holiday?

With a traditional key, you just switch it off.

You can see that I don't know much about the XF.

And if you used a key to switch off in an automatic the same would happen. Whatever that is...

In a moving vehicle with a runaway engine, I believe the correct procedure is to shift to neutral and then stop the engine. You will lose powered steering but you will have one shot at using the power brakes to stop. After that you lose powered braking.

Car makers vary on how to turn it off while in motion. You either press and hold, or press the button multiple times in rapid succession to turn off a car with a start button (unless it is the redundant lotus Elise with a key and a start button in which case you turn off the car with the key)

OK, I have picked up an XF drivers manual and it clearly states that if the car is switched off when Neutral is selected then there will be a 10 minute delay before the car goes into park.

So I guess that should give ample time to bring a vehicle to a stop before everything locks up. In an 'Emergency only situation.

PS, I'll make the Drivers Manual pdf available in the FAQ at the top. (I doubt that it is complete, but hey).
