I think any of you that think you will have fewer problems with a BMW are deluding yourselves. I have two of them right now, along with my 2009 XF-SC, and the BMW's are maintenance hogs. I have never had a car that I have owned in my entire life in the shop as much as our 2007 X3 has. After the starter failing while we were on vacation this past week and had to have it hauled off The OBX, I've been asked (a.k.a. ordered), by my darling spouse to replace it. I can't say I blame her considering the litany of problems we've had with it from Day One. The Z4, not so much, but then again it is not a daily driver. That said, I have replaced the water pump and all the associated bits, the soft top motor and various and sundry malfunctioning bits.

I'm doing forward planning for a possible replacement for my 05 XJR, so looking at a possible XF-S or R. Looking at the comments, it seems that the Audi's, BMW's, and Maseratis (not really in my budget but I can dream can't I?) are not really great alternatives if bought used.... My wife laughs at me for getting a used Jag (she drives a new 350 CLS), especially in the first 6 months of my used XJR when the car was in the workshop every month. The XF doesn't seem too bad from what I'm reading. I'm finding it hard to go away from a Jag though since there are seem to be issues with BM's and Audi's and a Benz really doesn't ride as well as a Jag..... sigh....

you cant make the general assumption that all CPO XF's are bad. ive had a CPO'ed X-Type and it ran fine....i DD all my jags and only had an issue with 1 car.
also, about the rental cars. The car you get as a rental has nothing to do with the car company, but rather the dealership themselves. a bigger dealership can afford buying cars to use for loaners, smaller ones might not be able to
