Default Rear axle leak please help!

Hello all, I do not post often but read lots on here. I have seen that SOME of the 2009 rear diffs were recalled seems like that recall ended in March 2011…..Me passenger side rear axle seal has started to leak…..I would like to just replace the seal but wanted to weigh in with some pros on jags as this is my first one.

I did buy the car from a dealer and they said nothing about the recall so I would think that if my car had the issue it would have happened long before now…….

Repairing the rear seal…..how many "special" tools are required to do this repair?

Thanks in advance

Brett

The revised differential and axles are designed to remedy the issues with leaks and bearing wear for a certain VIN range. Any Jaguar agency is aware of the VIN range and would uprate the parts as needed should your vehicle fall within that range.

While there are seals available, it may be best to replace the differential and axles with the later parts so there is no need to repeat the repair.

NBCat……my 09 XF-SC has just recently exhibited a vibration or soft rattle from the rear when I am starting up or moving at about 10 mph and after that no odd sounds. This vibration is subtle and if you move fast enough you hardly notice it, but when crawling in traffic at around 10 mph it is reproducible every time. Any ideas ?

VIN range would be great this is something i have not been able to find as of yet……When they replace the seal do they also replace the carrier barring at the same time or just pull the axle and replace the seal?

If my big cat does not fall in the recall I am considering doing this repair on my own, I have much experience with other types of vehicles, is there any "special Jaguar tools" required to do this repair?

The VIN range can be provided by any Jaguar agency as the document listing the procedure by JLR is JTB00175NAS5 - Rear Differential Replacement.

You can also directly contact Jaguar and provide your VIN, or go to TOPix and insert your VIN to see all relevant items for your vehicle.

Can you provide a link to the web site where we can check our VIN……..

It can be caused by many things, such as a tyre with a belt separation or even a flat spot.

Check the suspension components for tightness and wear.

NBCat - I ran my VIN in the provided webpage and the document number you gave me does not show up in the activity stream which I'm guessing means no new rear diff on the house for me?

Here you go…..check the VIN range on above bulletin. For XF(X250) it is R00001-R41865
That is the last 6 digits of the VIN. This is from JTB00175NAS5

If your VIN is outside the range, it will not show. So, yes, JLR most likely are not going to replace the differential under that campaign.

My VIN ends R32689 which would suggest I am in that range……Anyway you can take a screen shot and send it to me?

My friend who bought my "09 took her car to her favourite Ford dealer who had no trouble finding a replacement seal and fixing her Jag diff for a modest cost.

This diff was used in a lot of North American product and is a Dana diff so try that.
