Default Rear brake grinding noise, possible pad issue?

The noise is only coming from the drivers side rear, soft grinding with when not on the brakes, heavy grinding under braking.

I crawled underneath the car for a look see, and the swept inner surface of the rotor looks like only 2/3 of the brake pad is touching the rotor, meaning the shiny area doesn't go all the way out to the edge of the disc like the other rear brake rotor. The outside wear pattern is the same on both rotors, but the outside pad doesn't have a lot of meat left on it that I can see, so guessing the inside pad is going to look the same. Thinking the inner/outer pads wore unevenly?

Its their Sunday over here, so nothings open, but will post an update when I get the car looked at.

If it's grinding I'd pull the pads and inspect. The inner could be worn much more than the outer (pad gone = metal backing touching rotor) and if that's the case you will have to swap to a new set of rotors. Any shop can swap the pads/rotors. A dealer isn't needed.

How many miles on the car?

Inspection should be in order. I just completed replacement of my front rotors and pads after only about 25,000 miles. Never had a car that went through pads so quick, but never had a car that stopped as good either.

The inner pads will always wear faster than the fronts, since that's the side the piston is pushing on. The wear sensors are on the inside pad, if they were worn, i suspect you would get a message on the dash.

Most likely uneven wear that's causing the noise.

I had the rear grinding on my 09 a few months ago. Pads were shot. I took that opportunity to replace all 4 brakes with ceramic pads and high carbon rotors.

The dealer in the country I'm currently working in is the quickest way to get things done, even with the standard dealer mark-up. $430 for a pair of rear discs, $540 for new pads for all 4 wheels, & $84 for new windshield wiper blades (have to run the wipers at least twice a day because of the sand...), plus I have a box full of new coolant hoses that need to be installed... Much fun.

I didn't get any brake wear indication at all on the dash like Blackcoog mentioned and its a 2009 also.

Here is a good thread on the XF 2010+ pad wear sensors in case you are interested: https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...ads-low-76576/

The sensors can be more trouble then they are worth at times. It adds $70/axle for each pad change.

On my 2012 there are only 2 sensors in total. The front one sits on the inside of the driver's side inboard pad. The rear one sits on the inside of the passenger side inboard bad.

I just did the brake change on mine and did it before the sensors gave me a message. Therefore, just reused them.

The thing with the sensors is that if you change the pads before the sensors get to touch the rotors, you can just reuse them. But, once it gets to a point where it touches the rotor, then you have to throw it out and get new ones.
