Angry Restricted Performance (Red)

Hi,
I have owned a 3.0 XF D S for 5 years. It has had this red warning light problem over this 5 year period. It tends to vary when it comes up. Before I changed the cam belt it only came up during hard acceleration, this was dangerous as it instantly and aggressively cut power, causing a heavy thump through the transmission! After changing the cam belt it stopped happening altogether for a few years (about 50K miles).
Then it started to happen again, this time only between 20-30mph while tootling around town, a lot less dangerous as it has no affect on power at that speed, although it's extremely powerless after that. Stopping and switching off for a few minuets usually fixes it. Then it can be days, weeks or months before it happens again. I have had the error codes checked a few times, but there never are any to show!
I have not ventured to Jaguar with it at £100 per hour and the highest possible price for parts with no guarantee that it will be right when I get it back! A £1000 plus bill can soon add up, and now at over 10 years old and 130000 miles on the clock I'm told it's only worth about £3250! It's not worth the possible garage bills!!!
Shame because apart from that, it's been a very nice car!

The best thing you can do is get yourself a OBD reader and scan for codes when it happens before you turn off the engine. Some codes are temporary and will not show up on the OBD after a restart, although they are often logged so if you use something like SDD you can read them.

This problem is caused by a sticking secondary turbocharger shut-off valve due to corrosion of the vacuum actuator rod and link arm. Affected vehicles are fitted with a vacuum actuator rod retaining nut vehicles not fitted with a actuator rod retaining nut are unaffected. A repair kit is available from Jaguar partsdepartment consisting of a new vacuum actuator and link arm. Mark the position of the old link arm before removal to ensure the new link arm is fitted in the correct position. DO NOT change the adjustment of the vacuum actuator rod lock nut. The new link arm does not use a vacuum actuator rod retaining nut.

New actuator

Thank you, that's great, together with the photos it's a massive help. At least now I know what to look for. I will get round to changing this part when I can and let you know the out come. Thanks again

sounds like the alternator, I had to change mine twice (although second time was because the 1st mechanic hadn't properly tightened it the first time so it had been arcing for a long time), You can get them reasonably enough.

Red lights are the worst if not addressed as they tend to start a chain reaction right down to lights and transmission

Default Restricted performance

Hi to all if your car is going on restricted performance on 3.0 deisel engine its the manifold on these engine theres 2 and they are made from plastic as the car gets older they end having crack and when car gets hot the air escapes from the manifold and the light comes on. So they recommend both to change if one goes because soon a later other side will crack.

i had same issue with my both Jaguar xf 3.0 2009 and 2013.

if you take the engine cover of you will see oil and it will show you which side is leaking but they are alot of money to replace in uk they charge around £800 each.
