Default Service Required Message

So I'm getting the Service Required message when I start the car. There are tons of threads here and on the net about how to reset this. My question is how do I know "what" service it thinks is required?

I recently purchased this XF used and do not have its service history. I assume the message is based on either miles driven or time elapsed, but is there a way to know what it wants serviced?

I called the dealer who serviced it for the prior owner, but they wanted me to bring it in and declined to discuss any previous maintenance over the phone.

Is there a way to find this out or do I just perform the usual maintenance and reset it when I'm done?

i assume an ODB scan tool would tell you. Generally when i see it, it's because it's time for an oil change, but places like auto zone will scan for free and tell you.

if a check engine light is on, then you have a more concerning issue. if only "service required" is on, then its time for an oil change.

I created a similar thread a few months ago. There are instructions on how to clear the message if, like my situation, you recently had an oil change and the service light wasnt reset.

No codes and no check engine light. There was a dealer sticker showing the oil had been changed less than 300 miles ago. I guess they just didn't reset the service light.

Thanks for the replies.
