Default Startup sequence delay on cold starts

So this winter I've been noticing a pretty big lag between when the car is fired up and when the vents open/nav screen boots up. Probably about a 10 second or so delay. On warm starts the response is pretty much immediate. Has anyone ever experienced this before? Thanks.

btw its a 2009 Prem Lux XF. 128k km on the clock.

I notice it when it has been real cold....but not 10 secs or so...seems excessive...goes back to normal when weather gets back to decent temps.

Electronics can get sluggish when they are cold.

Wonder if it holds off switching on additional circuitry until battery power is up to level. In cold weather battery is weaker so perhaps the cause. Maybe have an auto shop do a load test of the battery

Thanks all for your responses. I'll have my battery tested when the car goes back in for service.

I turned on the car in accessory mode this morning (didn't start it) and I was immediately greeted with a low battery warning on the nav screen. I'm not experiencing any random glitches so once the car is running the power supply seems to be consistent.

Does this look like its a battery on the way out? The battery is 2.25 years old. Ultra flat panel AGM. I've also been keeping my 2 dashcams plugged in the 12v outlet at all times so perhaps this could be draining the battery.

Once the car is running the alternator helps to stabilize power

Dashcams may be slowly draining power (aren't they in a switch power source so they go off when car is off?) and combined with the cold that's showing weak battery. Or the battery itself might be failing. Given its over 2 years and showing signs of age I'd suggest replacement so you don't get caught somewhere...

I'll be damn..bad battery..

The 12 volt power outlet (cigarette lighter socket) as I have been told by an expert, is only active for 30 minutes once the car is off and shut up.

Thanks guys. The battery has a 5 year free replacement warranty so I'll just go get it swapped out free of charge and see if that sorts the issue.

I'm reading my xf handbook and it states that the vehicles electrical system must be reset once a new battery is fitted. Of course they say that this should be done by a licensed repair shop. Has anyone been able to diy the electrical system reset? If so, any tips on what to do? Thanks.

If you are talking about the Battery Monitor system...Don't worry about it..My JAG Tech friend, also a member of this forum now (Brian11) ..Told me yesterday that the Battery Monitor system doesn't need recalibrating. The factory school he went to told him that..The system will recalibrate on it's own over a few starts and stops..

Awesome thanks. I'm going to just swap it out myself then and hope it sorts the issue. Did you bother to put any dielectric grease on the terminals when you swapped out your battery? It looks like the dealer that installed my last battery didn't bother.

I have never put or heard of anyone putting dielectric grease on the battery terminals. It doesn't sound like a bad idea though. Typically it's used on spark plug boots.

You will need to reset the parking brake and all the windows auto up/down functions when you swap the battery.

I'm too lazy to go find out..I see this mentioned time and time again after a battery change....But could you please explain in simple terms on how to do these two resets for the world here to understand?

Thanks

It prompts you to pull the e-brake up after a battery reset. That is all you have to do to reset it. It will automatically adjust after you pull it up.

As for the windows this was pulled from a document someone wrote up a while ago:

Your switch has 5 positions. We'll call them:
  • "-2" which is the switch all the way down for automatic down
  • "-1" which is the switch slightly down for bringing the window down manually
  • "0" which is the switch just sitting on its normal position
  • "1" which is the switch slightly up for bringing the window up manually
  • "2" which is the switch all the way up for automatic up
The reset procedure is very simple:
  1. Shut the radio off and other source of noises, you are going to be looking for a little "click"
  2. Hold the switch of the window you wish to re-teach the limits in position "-1". Even after the window is all the way down, keep holding it and listen for a little click. When you hear it go to the next step.
  3. Hold the switch on position "1". Again, even after the window is all the way up keep holding it and listen for a "click".
  4. That is it! Repeat for all windows and you are all set!

It looks like my battery was losing charge from some parasitic draw due to my dashcam being plugged in the 12v outlet at all times. I unplug it now when I leave the car and for the past 4 days the electronics have fired up as soon as I start the car.
