Timing Chain
Hello everyone
I had my 2010 XFR (100k Kms) in for a pre-purchase inspection that a potential buyer was footing the bill for last week, apart from a few very minor and easily fixed issues which were resolved over the weekend the 20 year Jag tech noted:
"Clattering/rattling noise heard on cold start, not noticeable when car warmed up. Suspect timing chains are worn/stretched - would need to be rechecked cold"
The purchaser pulled out of the deal saying that he did not fancy a $7k repair bill when things went wrong with the belt, not sure where he got his numbers from but I suspect the Jag tech threw this number out there as a worst case scenario.
My question is, is there a timing chain tensioner on these engines, would it simply be a matter of adjust tension to tighten up the slack on the timing chain, and if it is just worn/stretched belt how come the noise disappears on warm up, surely a slack belt is a slack belt no matter how warm the engine is?
