Default water damage xf parts

hello, i am new to these forums and am looking for some info on parts and such for the XF 2011. My boss found a 2011 for 12K with salvage title and water damage of 6-8" of standing water. He is contemplating buying this car and having me repair it. I have never worked on a jag before, my own vehicle is a heavily modified dodge cummins 24V on wich ive done trans, engine, axle rebuilds and custom frame fab.

my questions are: where does one buy parts for diy rebuilds of a trans/engine for these cars, how much are the computers in these cars and where can you buy them, are there any after market sites that sell improved parts over factory for these cars?

i want to make out a worst case scenario of cost for buying a 100% rebuild of the car and work down from there. currently the cars computer does not work and the extend of the damage is unknown.

NCC,

FWIW Here is my take on your XF. If it really was only 6 to 8 inches of water and it runs well - go for it. If for any reason it is not running well - don't, as it has the potential of eating you alive.

The availibility of good used parts on a 2011 is slim to none. If cosmetics and corosion are the only issues that is a possibility.

Currently it does not run. No electronics work on it. I'm assuming it's just electrical as six to eight inches should not have been enough to flood the engine or leak in the transmission. Do these cars have one central computer and then a bus or are there multiple computers throughout the car that we need to be replaced and paired?

NCC,

I'm not the authority on this but the car does have multiple computers/ECUs/processors, sensors/senders, fuse/junction boxes, etc. From what you describe, there is also the possibility of engine hydro lock damage. On my car (not an XF) the engine intake is mounted quite low in the fender well making it prone to engine water damage in 8" of water, particularly at speed.

You should run, don't walk away from this car IMHO. I recon there is good reason flood cars go to "salvage".

Scares me to think about trying it. I guess the car is always worth salvage prices if it doesn't work out but you could burn a lot of cash frying electeonics along the way.

Funny part is, I wouldn't want the car for myself even if it did work out...and I wouldn't fee right selling it to anyone...even at the discount they'd demand.
