what mechanical should i have checked out before purchase

At this age/mileage you should expect to see a few rubber parts starting to show age.
Look at the struts very close, look for weeping from the seals. (I bet the rears are leaking)
Make sure the rear diff is very dry at all shaft points.
Get a full service history, look for water pump repairs. If it is untouched, expect some repair in the near future. Also make sure the oil has at least yearly service intervals.
Look at the brakes, rears last about 20K a set, fronts you can expect around 40K, rotors last for about 2 sets of pads, expect to have to spend a few dollars on them soon.
Great cars, but as with any Euro motors, repairs are pricey.
