Overheating
the biggest weakness in these cars that causes over heating is water pump failure, also the plastic lines break. I have the 2010 XF Supercharged, just about every XF from that era will need a water pump replacement at some point. Also as previously posted try to avoid driving the vehicle until issue is dealt with. Since the vehicle has no real temp gauge over heating can occur quickly, damaging the engine.

Yes, the XF's and many other cars have weak points of plastic piping that cracks open and water pumps that start to leak after over 50K miles, but when you get right down to it, the XF does not have an exotic engine cooling system and troubleshooting it for those and any other problems is the same as any other car. So with that said, start watching videos if you want to know how to troubleshoot overheating instead of having everyone reinvent the wheel on here:

No attempt at reinventing the wheel here. Just friendly advice. The XF'S from that era are sensitive to over heating, and it can damage the engine very quicky. I wouldn't want that to happen to anyone. I also find it interesting someone would post a Scotty Kilmer video on a Jaguar forum, since he bashes European vehicles, and their owners so heavily.

I'm not trying to hijack the thread, but just trying to get some more information. First, let me say that I'm big on preventive maintenance, and don't have any problem with replacing parts that MAY be either questionable, or at the end of their useful life. Having said that, we have a 2009 XF, with the 4.2 liter engine. I've heard stories about questionable plastic components, both the thermostat housing/water crossover, as well as plastic water pump impellers. My question is, even though the mileage is low on this car (36,000 miles), it's still 9 years old, and these components have gone through 9 years of both summer heat as well as frigid winters. Therefore, should I consider replacing these components before they fail?
If the answer is yes, how difficult is it to swap out the water crossover piping? Pictures show 4 bolts holding it in place, but when I look at our car, I don't see where these 4 bolts are. They seem to be pretty well buried under either the crossover itself or other components. I'd hate to start disassembling things, only to find out that I can't actually do this at home, and/or I need special tools, in order to do this....tools that only the dealer has.
Any advice would be appreciated!
