Default XF 2011 battery drain problem

Jag XF, 2011, Premium, 65,000 miles. I don’t drive the car that often and have had battery issues leading to a recent battery replacement. The people who changed the battery told me after they examined the car they found that the cigarette lighter power plug, in the center console, the source for my iPhone charging cable, does not shut off when the ignition is shut off causing the battery drain. I know that a trickle charger can help (if I plug in the charger) or I can pull the iPhone charger out of the center console plug (if I remember to do it).

My question is, I’ve used this method to charge the phone for years and have never had this battery drain problem. What could have changed to cause this power source to not shut down?

Is there a software issue or is it hardware causing this to not shut off?

Any suggestions would be most welcome. Thanks
