XF Lovers can't catch a break

I'm surprised the 2011-12 xj didn't make the list with all the problems it has had with the roof creaks cracks and rattles. Even though the fix has worked for some. There are a lot of owners that have had it fixed 3-4 times with the noises returning. Resale value continues to be horrendous.

I'm left confused...wasn't it JD Power that upped Jag's reliability ratings to be second only to Lexus? Wasn't this at least in part to the XF's reliability?

JD Powers said this was due to the small sample size causing large statistical variation...

Incorrect. Jaguar is still highly rated by new owners in the first 90 days of ownership for the 2012 models. The XF hasn't been around long enough for the reliability survey to be meaningful. The reputation of the predecessor S model is still dominating those stats.
2010 was the highest rated, followed by 2012 with 2011 and 2009 sharing a worse rating. All Jaguar XF are fairly highly rated. There are a lot of BMW products rated similarly and Mercedes Benz does a lot worse.

There are three kinds of lies: Lies, Damn Lies and Statistics.
In most of these statistics a broken switch is counted as one, as is a total engine wrecking. A bit more helpful is e.g. ADAC reports on roadside help: These only include faults that leave you dead in your track. But there again you need to drill down as small electric issues can leave you stranded but may only cost a tenner to fix. OTOH it may be a recurring case of expensive gearbox faults. Neither of these catch things like the premature piston/ring wear that Audi has been suffering for some years now, nor does it catch the fact that Audi are dragging their heels when it comes to honouring their warranty obligations. And to confuse the picture further JD Powers catches XF owners not RTFMs and so having problems opening the glove box because they try opening by doing exactly what the system has been designed to avoid reacting to

One thing I noticed is that the XF is still pretty expensive as compared to the S-Type at about the same point in its life cycle. In my case, I bought a 2005 S-Type in Jan 09 for about $14K. A 2009 XF at about the same point (4 years) is going for about $28K or so. I bought when the economy was cratering so that might have had something to do with the price differential.

In my opinion from having owned other similar luxury sports sedans.. Jaguars are good cars... I agree with Jagular, you definitely get a lot for the money when compared to BMW and Audi. It seems Jaguar owners tend to complain more about the issues with their Jaguar because of the cars past reputation. So, when something does happen they think, "oh, here we go with the service/quality issues". I have a 2012 XF Portfolio Sport and I'm guilty of this when my car was squeaking. (It has since been fixed and the car is almost perfect now). I came from a 2008 BMW 550i. Candidly, I had similar issues with my BMW when I first got it. I made several trips to BMW to get a few minor issues corrected. Like my Jaguar, once BMW corrected the issues the car was great. The funny thing is that I never complained about my BMW because I figured it was a quirky issue versus questioning the quality of the vehicle or company. I came into the Jaguar hoping for the best but expecting the worse and with my BMW I expected excellence. In the end, "in my opinion", they are really close in dependability. My two-cents...

When the economy fell off the cliff, luxury cars took a huge hit and there is a smaller than usual supply through the bad years. Now that were are starting to recover, there is an uptick in the market for those looking to upgrade their rides but not ready to buy new luxury vehicles. '08-'11 used vehicles are seeing a smaller supply with a slightly expanding demand...

Read the BMW, Mercedes, and Audi forums and get a dose of reality with those brands. My experience with Jaguar so far has been great. I do have some concern about the long term realibilty of the switching components (turn signal, rotary shifter, radio controls, wiper stalk) as they do not have the solid feel of my BMW, but I am not overly concerned. I walked away from BMW as I believe they are overengineered to the point of expensive failure being a concern.

I read an article recently that actually predicted a slight appreciation in used luxury cars in the US over the next year...
