Question XF park brake

When i park on a slight gradiant my 11 plate 14000 XF miles rolls forward about 6" after i have selected park. I would have thought the parkbrake would take a hold straight away. The car is still under warrenty but i dont want to take it too the dealer if this is the norm

Mine does this also. It is a bit weird but most if not all automatics move to some degree when park is selected and the brake released. I tend o set the parking brake first, then P and then release the footbrake. Otherwise the transmission park brake pings alarmingly if I am parked on a steep grade when I restart and drive off, particularly if parked facing uphill.

The park brake is usually a mechanical pawl inside the transmission tailshaft housing.

When you say "selected Park" it sounds like you mean you turned the rotary gear selector (PRNDS) to P. If this is what you mean, it has nothing to do with the electric parking brake and your transmission may be on its way to a painful death. This would account for the rollback also if the parking brake was unused and you are making the transmission pawl hold all the weight. The parking brake control is the shiny silver lever that is rearmost of all the controls on the center console between the front seats. Simply lift this lever to apply the brake and a light will come on in the instruments. You don't have to do anything to release the brake, simply drive away from a stop and it will release and the light will go out.

When you select P....the electronic Park brake does not engage automatically

they used to in older XJs i believe.

The park brake in the transmission is pretty robust. It is designed to easily hold the car on a steep ramp indefinitely. Jaguar and ZF both know that North Americans rarely use the parking brake.

It looks like i have been misinformed , the jaguar rep told me the parkbrake was applied when i shifted the gear selector knob to park. I take it the gearbox brake pal is applied when park is selected and the rear axle park brake should be applied manually.

from what I remember on my XF....the park brake was not automatic.

however you can confirm this with a simple test. next time you put the car in PARK, check to see if the brake light comes up on the dash
