Default XF Trip LCD intermittent dimming

Hello. I have just purchased a 2010 pre facelift XF 3.0L TTD Diesel Portfolio. Amazing car. I have found that my trip LCD (between the odometer and rev meter) sometimes loses its brightness, making it almost impossible to see in daylight. Its not the instrument cluster's backlight either as the blue light still works, and u can see the light bleed behind the lcd change when u adjust the brightness with the wheel. So it appears to be a dodgy LCD screen for the trip. Just wondering if its difficult to just swap for one of these? I can buy another instrument cluster and looks simple to swap but I will have to find one with similar kms as it looks hard to get the KM changed over/coded and they are around $250 so though this might fix it

I would get a used IPC from ebay and swap them over. Used IPC's tend to be cheap because they are VIN encoded and have to programmed properly. The screen comes off fairly easily, its just held in by some plastic clips and attached with a ribbon cable:

You might find your ribbon cable is not making a good connection which is why it fail intermittently.

If you buy a used IPC and remove its LCD screen and put it in your current IPC it won't need coding.

You're right, there seems to be a dearth of them in Australia. I can't see many for sale, is fleabay not a big thing for car parts there?

They appear to prefer to call them Gauge clusters, and charge an extortionate amount for them (https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/253236171302)

Whereas they're two'a'penny here (https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/155008056794)

Might just order one from the UK. I believe all instrument clusters were identical other than the XFRs?

Also, this guy had an identical issue. Why did he have such a hard time of it? Does the cluster itself keep the info? Rather then just be a screen?

No link to the post you are referring too, but yes, the cluster is a core part of the car electronics, its VIN encoded, holds a load of settings and won't let the car do anything if its configuration doesn't match the other modules.

If you try to use a whole unit you have to reprogramme it, Jaguar themselves won't even do that, they will only programme a new module from factory, you need a specialist who knows how to rewrite/reset the module to allow it to be reprogrammed - they are not designed to be replaceable with used items.

Non og my links seem to work. Its a pain. It was on this forum 7 years ago. Same car, exact same issue. He believed it was the the module backlight itsf not the screen and replaced it and just had a nightmare getting it reprogrammed. May be something i need to love with or get a quote from jag to replace

The backlight is an array of different coloured LEDs.

The way it changes from white to orange to red is by using rows of different coloured LEDs, its really rudimentary. However I suspect they use those as they are not particularly effected by temperature, fairly reliable and don't need a high voltage step up like a regular TFT backlight.

If your back lights are not working then its likely that whatever controls them has failed rather than the individual LEDs as there is some redundancy in there, if you are lucky it's the voltage regulator which is replaceable but it could be the logic controller that tells them when to turn on, in which case its knackered and you need a new IPC. But you seem to think the lights are working and its just the TFT screen that is faulty.

The thing with taking the IPC apart is that the needles have to come off, you need to be careful not to break them, and get them back in the right place when you reassemble it.

Below is a picture of the inside of the IPC, you can see the multiple LEDs that sit behind the dials and screen. The screen is connected by a ribbon cable to the IPC board and sits in a plastic cradle over the LEDs.

The LCD can still be seen when it dims, which makes me think its actually the backlight LEDS behind the TFT turning off as I would assume the TFT would be black if it was dying. I had hoped the TFT has its own backlight and that was the issue but looks like its the backlights directly behind the TFT. All other backlights work perfectly. What gives me hope is that when it dims at night, I can see the white backlight adjusting with the scroll wheel. I will order a IPC from the UK for $100 as its work swapping the TFT out just in case its the TFT just dimming.
