Default ?? for you guys with the wrinkled dash

2011 XF
Bubbled dash showed up the other week. Just a short wrinkle in front of the speedo hump on the driver side. And a very small wrinkle over by the center speaker.

Question is.....
Will this get progressively worse?
Did it start small and spread?

I am thinking I should wait for the problem to spread before I tear it all apart...

I'm not sure if you saw my response to the visitor message about this issue you put under my profile so here it is again:

I used this shop to fix my dash:

A & T Upholstery
8579 Jefferson Hwy
Maple Grove, MN 55369
(763) 541-1968

It's kind of a mom and pop type of shop. It doesn't look that great from the outside. In my opinion I don't think they would take the car and pull the dash for you. You could always ask though. I brought them just the dash and the leather already pulled off. All they had to do was clean it up and glue it down. I'd let them pull the leather off if I did it again. Then you don't have to worry about the leather shrinking. Any shop should be able to glue the material back down so I would call around. It depends on if you want them to pull the dash as well. I'd bet most will shy away from that.

If you want me to pull the dash for you so you can bring it to an upholstery shop we could probably work something out. I could drive out to you so your car is sitting at your place while the dash is getting fixed.

Yes, I just saw that and Thanks!

But, should I wait until more of the leather releases, or go ahead now, since it has just shown the first sign of failure? good winter project I suppose....

Yup, I did it during the winter since I store the XF and drive something else. It's up to you if you want to wait. I suppose it may be easier if more of it lifts up but the sight of it pissed me of every time I got in the car so sooner was better for me.

I assume then they took it off completely and re-glued the entire dash so it does not continue to delaminate.

I removed the leather from the dash and brought the leather and the dash to the shop.

Mine got worse and worse. Still getting worse, really, since the 2 upholstery shops I talked to about it both said no.

Drive up here to MN and I'll help you get the dash out. We can drop it off to get it re-glued.

ROADTRIP!!!

Actually, with a squalling one year old and an irritable 4 year old, that doesn't really have the appeal it used to.

Short answer... yes it will get progressively worse, to the point that you have large sections of dash just "bubbling" up with leather pulling away from the speaker area.

I was able to convince Jag to replace my dash under the CPO warranty, but I had to pay $700 or so for the labor...

Cheers, Will

It really isn't bad. Watch that short Youtube removal video and it will help you get started. Take pictures of every bolt and lay them out on the ground in order of removal. Get good pictures of each connector as well but you can't really screw up the connectors since they aren't interchangeable. Nothing complicated about removing the torx bolts. It's fairly easy to find each one. Getting the dash out of the car after all the bolts are out is probably the most difficult part but should be easy with two people to guide it out. It took me 45 mins.

And take lots of pictures and then do a nice write up to help those who need to do this in the future. You will be forever appreciated by the forum community.

Check and make sure your not under the Takata passenger side airbag recall. I'm waiting to redo mine because the service manual says the dash has to come off to fix it.

Yeah, sadly there's a TSB for airbag replacement that doesn't require the removal of the dash top.
