95-97 XJR options and packages?
#21
Heh ...true.
But now that leads to another question. Since it seems that rear heated seats were standard on at least the 96 XJRs, were the heated rear seat switches always in that console "extension" or sometimes elsewhere?
I seem to recall seeing some 97 XRJs in the US without the rear extension.
Curious to see if someone has a US spec brochure for the 97.

Fortunately my 96 came with the 1996 full line sales guide. It does state in the options chart that "All-Weather Package includes traction control and heated front/rear seats (standard on XJR/XJ12)". Guess that proves why you've seen many 96 cars with them. Another thing it mentions is the Walnut trim is available on XJR with cream interior, a walnut shift knob is available with cream interior, and finally the XJR gets the stained birds eye maple trim and gear shift knob. I suppose that was standard with the dark interior. I kind of get the impression that 1995 didn't have rear heated seats. My 97 VDP has them in the console extension.

1997 XJR US spec options per the brochure - Colors
I received a US spec 1997 complete Jaguar brochure yesterday and it seems to clarify most questions about the standard features and options for the 1997 XJR.
First, the following are the standard color options, exterior with available interior options. Regarding wood options, in 1997 some exterior/interior color combinations appear to have substituted as standard the lighter XJ6 style burl walnut interior trim versus the historically standard XJR stained bird's-eye maple trim. The color chip guide seems to suggest these substitutions as standard, but the main brochure lists the walnut interior trim as optional. So this is still open to interpretation whether a standard or optional substitution. The bottom line is that some color XJR combinations in 1997 can have the standard XJ6 interior with burl walnut.
Although not mentioned, this seems apply to the steering wheel as well, as these burl walnut interiors seem to receive the wood XJ6 style wheel instead of the standard XJR wheel.
It is also interesting to note how limited the color options were for the 1997 XJR. There were 13 exterior colors available in 1997, but only 5 were available for the XJR.
It is also interesting to see some XJRs from 1997 that did not have the body color grill surround and trunk trim. I've seen this on several 1997 Titanium exterior colored XJRs. This option is not mentioned in the US brochure, so I don't know if this was an option some owners or dealers simply opted to special order, or if Jaguar decided to use chrome trim on some XJR colors as standard in 1997.
The brochure also notes that "Special order color combinations are available at an additional charge". So it possible that just about any combination ultimately is possible.

1997 XJR US spec options per the brochure - Features
1997 Full Line Standard Features and Options (USA)
STD - Standard feature
OPT - Optional
N/A - Not available on the XJR, but may be standard or optional on the XK8 or Vanden Plas

Features
What's clear is that along with the Vanden Plas, the XJR was Jaguar's most highly standard feature equipped model. The XJR is the only model with an LSD, even the new XK8 wasn't so equipped.
Options like the long wheel base, Autolux leather, lambswool mats, inlaid burl walnut trim, walnut picnic tables, rear cigar lighter, front seat adjustment from rear and chrome mirrors & side molding are all traditional VDP only options.
1997 changed the availability of heated rear seats. They were no longer available on the XJR, but optional on all other XJ models. Chrome plated wheels were also available across the line, but not for the XJR.
The 5 speed transmission, variable rate steering, stability control, drip-wipe wipers, one-touch down for all windows and seat belt pre-tensioners are XK8 only options. Clearly the electric convertible top is also unique to the XK8, and headlight washers in the USA were only an option on the XK8. The XK8 had 2 position driver adjustment/setting memory versus 3 position for the rest of the line.

Very good !
As to 'special orders'........
My impression, and I'm happy to be corrected, as that special orders on USA cars were very unusual in this era, and previous eras as well. I think 'Jaguar USA' essentially ordered cars 'as they saw fit' and didn't leave dealers and customers with many car-by-car choices.
Of course, 'very unusual' isn't the same as 'never', but still I think cars built-to-customer-order would be very much an exception.
For example, I don't envision a dealer ordering a couple titanium XJRs with the body colored grille surround and a couple with the chrome surround. I think it was more like Jaguar USA ordering a batch of cars built one way...and that's what the dealers got.... and then perhaps the next batch built differently...very possibly as a result of dealer input.
This sort of arrangment was/is typical-ish for imported cars, judging from my dealership experience over the years.
Cheers

You are probably right in general but it was certainly possible to order a car from Jag at that time. I specially ordered my XJS in 94 because I wanted a manual gearbox and there were none around.

Depends on the market it seems....
For example, the US didn't get headlamp washers in the US at all on the XJR from what I can tell, and no heated rear seats in 95 or 97 (but did in 96).
Interesting eh?

There is conflicting info in various Jag tech publications.
The shop manual shows 153mm front ground clearance and 160 rear ground clearance for all 6 cylinder cars.
For all V12 cars it shows 143mm front and 160mm rear
No mention of standard/sport suspension
The X300 technical guide shows overall vehicle heights as
XJ6 51.7" (51.5" with sport package)
XJ12 51.8 " (51.5" with sport package)
XJR 51.3 "
Yet I'm 95% sure I read....somewhere....that USA spec XJRs were taller due to bumper height requirements (?)
The differences in overall height are pretty darn minor.
Note that in 1995 the curb weight is listed as 4215 lbs and in the 1997 brochure as 4125 lbs. Not sure if that is a typo or the car actually did get a bit lighter. It seems curious that the weight has some digits perfectly juxtaposed though.
1995 Tech Guide says USA XJR = 4215 lbs ROW XJR 4134 lbs

Canadian cars got a heated windshield too, and I don't believe it was available, even as an option, in the USA.

1996 US spec XJR
I finally picked up a 1996 US brochure, and after looking through it, it appears that the only difference is that in 1996 the XJ received "thicker" glass to reduce noise.
And as part of the "All Weather Package" that was standard on the XJR, the 1996 XJR has heated rear seats, so it has that rear console extension.
Other than that, the 1996 appears the same as the 1997.

Mine is 97 spec XJR imported from Japan 5years ago as a L/H drive it was probably ordered that way as they like to be different .It was a one owner car when it arrived here I have seen several L/H Jaguars come into N/Z from Japan .It has the wash head lights Cupholders Electric sun roof memory seats tilt steering ' It has the 3.27 diff which is I believe std for XJR but mine is not a power lok. I have since changed it to R/H drive plus 5 spd manual. My next job to do is a 3.58 powerlok diff which I have here.

Have you opened it up to confirm that? LSD was standard issue according to all Jag literature.
I suspect it's a limited slip diff....but the clutches have just worn out. That happened on mine.
I have a 3.58 LSD in mine now, BTW. Works well, worthwhile change

Significant MPG impact with change to 3.58?
.
#40
Heh heh, I lost 1.5-2.0 mpg on the highway, which coincidentally is the amount I gained by installing the Andy bracket .
Engine speed @ 70 mph is about 200 higher with the 3.58
Raw acceleration? A palpable improvement but it's not like the car was entirely transformed into something it wasn't before. I felt the difference more in terms of low/medium throttle responsiveness, to be honest.
If a diff changed is needed anyway I'd say go with the 3.58 ratio. But I wouldn't go thru the effort and expense just to get the 3.58 gears.
The torque/power band is so wide on the supercharged engine it doesn't really *need* the gearing. It's not a peaky engine that needs help to come up to a boil, if you know what I mean.
Cheers
