Belts squeak horribly...helpp
I recently noticed my belts were squeaking everytime I started the car. It didn't bother me because it went away after 30 seconds but then it seemed to grow in intensity over time. Finally changed the 2 belts ( AC and ALT) because when I would turn off the car you could smell burning rubber. Now I Changed them and it stopped for about a week. Now that its down to 30 degrees it seems to be squeaking very badly like everytime I step on the gas till its warmed up fully. No burning rubber smell yet. Has anyone had this issue?

check your A/C ideler pulley.mine sqweeled alot and the belts were not that old, and i was in a lazy mood so i just shot them with belt dressing,without much sucess.so i just lived with it till the A,C belt flew off.found a new pulley on ebay for $85,ouch!.found a good substitute for under $20.contact me and i'll give you the part # if that is the problem...steve.

Not too hard to replace....about the same as doing the same task on any other car. I spent a total of a couple hours on the job. Would've been faster but I smashed my finger and spent 20 minutes hopping around with my hand between my knees and cursing up a storm.
Re-bonding seems to typically run $200 or so from Damper Doctors or similar but I found a local guy who charges only $110 and did a wonderful job. Much better than $1000 for a new part. Of course, the car was down for a few days.

No offense (I seem to say that alot!) I wouldn't let Pep-boys do it if it were $2.39. For a professional shop at $80 an hour I'd expect it to be about a 2 hour job. Remember, you want people working on your Jaguar that KNOW Jaguars and are skilled professionals...they should be able to get in and out and be fairly familiar with the job as the've probably performed it a time or two on X300's.

No offense (grin) and I would normally agree, but.....
If a mechanic can sucessfully replace the balancer on a '67 Mustang or '82 Chevy pickup or just about any other plain-as-mud car, he can do it on an X300 six cylinder Jag.
I just did this job a couple weeks ago. There's really nothing complicated about it.
Well....OK...I'll retract that partially. A non-Jag guy might not know how to de-tension the drive belts. But he ougha be able to figure it out easily enough :-)

Remove fan assembly
Slacken drive belts
Remove center bolt*
Install pulley/balancer removal tool (garden variety type)
Remove balancer
My balancer has a removable pulley for the supercharger belt that others may not have.
* Long breaker bar and big socket....1-5/16ths as I recall. I used the torque of the starter to break the bolt loose. An impact gun is more typically used but mine is too big....meaning I'd have to remove the radiator for clearance. No thanks :-)

I got fooled thinking my harmonic balancer was bad and almost pulled it off until I tested it. Testing is easy and I don't know why this hasn't caught on. I have explained it several times on this forum evey time this subject comes up.
Test it first::::: Put a small dob of white paint ( I use white-out) on the timing wheel, and both of the pully flanges. The dobs have to be in a line with each other. If dots stay lined up balancer is OK. If balancer is bad they will rotate with respect to each other. Easy and could save a lot of work and expense.

ok guys,heres the part # for A/C idle pulley that i bought at auto zone[duralast 231018].i had the same problem with sqeaks,turns out it was A/C pulley.i would much rather inspect it than a high dollar damper pulley.if its the damper than you can go on line and find services to rebuild it,i belong to a chrysler club and there is a place that offers that service.PLEASE do yourself a favor.loosen the A/C idler pulley,than wiggle and rotate.chances are there lies your problem...steve.
