Default Clucking noise from console area 1995 XJR

This is for those who, like me, go a wee bit crazy over strange squeeks, rattles, and clunks. It's a curse, I tell ya! :-).

Those not similarly afflicted can skip reading this.

A couple roads near my house have a very irregular surface and the car actually develops sort of a bobbing/oscillating motion when driven on them at 20-30 mph. Whenever drving on these roads I would get a clucking noise....just like making a cluck sound with your tongue against the roof of your mouth...from the console area. Very nerve wracking.

The fix was very easy, though. I shouldn't have tolerated the noise for so long.

With the car on the hoist I could easily duplicate the sound by pushing the transmission up and down on the notoriously loosey-goosey Jaguar transmission mounting. It took only a few moments to determine the noise was coming from the electrical harness where it goes thru a grommet in the floorboard directly above the transmission.

One spritzer of aerosol lubricant on the grommet silenced the noise completely.

I wouldn't have expected a "cluck" noise from a harness going thru a grommet but, hey, I won't argue with success.

Cheers
DD

Another one for the "stickies", mmmmm.

Good fix though Doug, small things sometimes make the weirdest sounds.

Heh heh, I can tell you where to look for and how to fix about a dozen funny noises on an X300. Maybe I should write 'em all down.

As an aside I'll mention that my kids suffer right along with me, as I am forever asking one or the other of them to drive while I crawl around the inside of the car tracking the noise.

"Oh, GAWD, Dad. AGAIN? [rolling eyes] Didn't we just do this a few weeks ago?"
"Yes, but you owe me."
"For what?"
"Everything"
"For how long?"
"Tee hee hee. Until I die"

There is a mild satisfaction in torturing your children with your own quirks and silliness :-)

They love me, though :-)

Cheers

Yep,

I was telling Plums about my daughter and Diesel fuel in her S2 XJ6.

When either of them complain about their cars, 1 X XJ40, 1 X Commodore V6 S/charged, I freely offer the keys to the MK10. Surprisingly neither has taken the offer, mmmm.

PLEASE write them down, I might decide to quieten mine down one day, the stereo is running out of volume, JUST kidding, but a list of "what and how too's" would be soooooo handy.

At some point you may welcome the noises as proof that you do not need a hearing aid.
