The original pump in the AJ26 had a black ( I think) plastic impeller that fell apart, probably heat related. Since then they have a white impeller, as do most aftermarket pumps, and these are good. I'm not sure about the metal impeller, but the consensus appears to be that they do not hold up because of cavitation, which may be related to the type of antifreeze used. I recall reading that high silicon antifreeze prevents cavitation, but is not compatible with the Jag engine.
Please guys, I am not trying to start another coolant discussion, but correct me if I have the story wrong.

Sean & RJ: Of course I haven't been an X308 owner that long comparatively, and I haven't read every post, etc., on the subject; but this is the first time I've heard this. Isn't conventional wisdom/practice that the early plastic-impellered water pumps be replaced with metal? Hasn't pretty much everyone done this? I am honestly curious and wish to learn.
Cheers!

I'd advise getting an "Airtex" Pump. It's what Jaguar supply now and is upgraded from the old.

Well, I replaced my water pump with a metal-impellered one a few years back before I got the memo about cavitation. Cavitation means having cavities, or a vacuum created in the coolant around the vanes. I haven't noticed any problem. I suppose it might affect coolant flow ? I was on a "chuck the plastic kick" at the time, replacing the secondary cam chain tensioners, thermostat housing and water pump.
