Default 2002 XJ8L: Replacing front shock upper bushings

I need to replace the front upper bushings on my 02 XL8L. I can't be sure but from my reading of the JTIS information, I do not believe that these bushings are under spring tension when the vehicle is stationary. Am I correct in thinking that I can replace them simply by unbolting the upper mount on each side, replacing the bushing and reattaching it, working from topside (under the hood) only?

I would hate to be wrong and have a shock mount blasted into my aging face.

RThe only load on the top shock rod WHILE SITTING ON THE FRONT WHEELS is th shock pressure itself. My well worn shocks seem to have about 15 to 20 pounds force max. Or just jack the body about 2 to 3 inches from level- still on the wheels and you will relieve the force.

Hi
I think the front shock absorber upper mount bushing is pressed into the upper mount. You can buy Upper Shock Bushing Kit (part# MNC2168/69.KIT).

According to Motorcarsltd: "The Jaguar XJ8's factory upper shock mount bushings are prone to premature failure causing general degradation in suspension stability and unwanted vibration and clatter.

When it comes time to replace the factory shock mount bushings, you'll be surprised to learn that replacement bushings are not available from Jaguar! Instead, customers are forced to buy a complete shock-mount plate assembly at a much higher price.

Jaguar XJ8 Upper Shock Bushing Kit: replaces stock sponge-type bushings with heavy duty urethane bushings. Each Upper Shock Bushing Kit includes 4 urethane bushings, nuts, washers, and installation instructions. Single kit services both sides."

Here is another thread where the forum member wolvesfan removed it and had to use a press to get the old bushings out and the new bushings in (see post#5 and #1):

Thanks, Ross, for the tip on how to jack and relieve shock residual pressure. Exactly the information I needed.

And thanks, Jim for the information about needing to press the bushings out and into the upper shock mount. I was generally aware of that and think I have the tools to do it. Also, thanks for the tip about buying bushings (only) from an independent source.

You guys and others on this Forum are remarkably helpful in sharing your Jag expertise with us ordinary wannabes. A blessing to you all!

Thanks again ! Just in the process of replacing upper bushings for my 2002 vdp . This forum is a great source of info for us DIY 'S . Located hard rubber bushings i had laying around . Perfect sizes just have to freeze them and cut around 1/8 inch off the thickness ! Pressed out the old , installed the new ! All is good again ! Keep up the greatness of this forum !

Rhino ramps are perfect for this, they bring the front end up to a nicer height to work on.

Also, please note that it's important not to let the shaft on the shock rotate, as this can damage the shock internally.

Without jacking the car you can push the plate back down.

Yep, you can. But it is sure easier to reattach the mount if you jack the car up 3 or 4 inches to take the pressure off.

Default Good upper mounts from Rockauto

FYI:
All good ideas on this subject! FYI, I just replaced both upper mounts on my 2001 XJ8.
I purchased the entire mounts from ROCKAUTO RockAuto Parts Catalog
for $53.99 each plus shipping.
The mounts look great and MUCH improve my front end handling/noise, since the old ones had crumbled to dust.
Great forum, thanks to all.
