98 VDP 5HP24 Transmission rebuild - Notes from my experience HOW TO
Yesterday, I posted on my recent rebuild experience on the 5HP24 in my 98 and it was suggested I include a write-up I did for other forum members in a posting. The attachment is that write-up. It isn't intended as blow by blow detail as there are many v good descriptions online regarding the process. Instead it tries to focus on the issues I ran into that I hadn't found in my research & some of my lessons learned. It also is more detailed on the steps I took to get the transmission out of, and back into, the car - which I found the hardest part of the whole effort.
I hope it is of help to others going through the experience and am always happy to answer any questions,.

What a wonderful and insightful narrative of your rebuild project! I rebuilt a Ford automatic transmission or two many years ago, and your descriptions and pictures triggered powerful memories. At my advanced age I probably will never remove, rebuild or reinstall another transmission. But I can certainly appreciate your articulate intelligence in giving us such a vivid understanding of the significant problems to be anticipated. Your post will be a godsend to anyone planning a similar project. All of us are in your debt.

Happy to report the car is now at 168,000 miles and is the tranny is 100%. The tick I mentioned at the end of the writeup has gone.
This summers work is to try to fix the drivers seat memory. It hasn't worked for years, with all the symptoms of a bad potentiometer gear that many have reported. Seat is out of the car now, but so far I haven't found a problem. If I don't find something today, I'm going to reinstall and see if the issue isn't as simple as one or more pots just being out of range.
At least having the seat out allowed a full carpet cleaning to get rid of years of coffee stains on the side of the tunnel next to the cup holder & also allowed me to do a better job of re-dying the left side seat bolster that has a piece of leather that refuses to hold dye and was a problem from the time I bought the car in 1999 (and that has been an annual job ever since)........
Kids have all left home, so we have too many cars now, so this might just be the last year I have her. Getting lots of pressure to clear some of my underused toys & having trouble supporting keeping a car that is getting less than 2000 miles a year. I think it prob. costs me as much to to insure it as I will get on a sale.
