CEL P0456 and Failsafe

I keep getting a CEL +/- Failsafe Engine , always P0456- minor evaporative leak . I think I should replace the gas cap and go from there. Not really sure where all potential leaks could be coming from. I tried search function but anyone have advice on trouble spots to check on 2001 XJ Vanden Plas? Thanks!

Please keep me informed. I have the same issue with mine right now. I was told to get a "smoke" test at my local Aamco dealer to see where the leak is located at. So far I've refused to spend the $50 just to see what is wrong. The error does disable my cruise control and will probably irritate me enough to get it done soon.

Hi
Look at this "My First Trouble Code - P0456" - could be gas cap (cleaning and oiling) or Evaporator Vapor Canister Close Valve (including the Vapour pipe connecting Vapor Canisters):

I will be posting a new thread on Evaporator System.

Thanks Jim. I know my gas cap has been replaced before my ownership of the car, but that does not mean its at fault again. I'm not sure where the CCV is located at the moment but will further investigate. I do have a copy of the JTIS but have to steal my daughters computer to try and open that since I am using a Mac.

Not related issues, and its not a gas cap in most cases but a evap oring like on the charcoal can pipes, a can close valve or purge valve. Small evap leaks are almost imossible to find even with a smoke test. You useally check o rings and go from there, parts substitution is about the only way to eventually fix. Small evap leaks are very small issues and impossible to see smoking. Ive had leaks i know where theyre at and yet cant see smoke coming out

Thanks for the replies. I found another thread with pictures of the Evap System on XKR I think, hopefully XJ similar. I will check the Purge Valve next and then the canisters, the CCV and the little tube. I did notice alot of rust around the top of the fuel filler neck. I am sure that the gas cap was having trouble sealing around this so I carefully cleaned this rusty debris off and the gas cap seems to seal better now. I'll see if the code and failsafe come back before digging further into the Evap System, maybe smoke test..

Hi targa81
I started a new thread on the emission evap system with component parts diagrams, photos and part numbers:
https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...iagrams-60872/
There also is a problem with weblink to PDF file you provided for XK evap DIY. I was able to look at the source code for this thread and figure out the problem. This is the weblink correction: (http//:www .jaguarforums.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=12135&d=1312422786 ) - I added a space between www and .jaguarforums to show the entire weblink address.
