We be rolling again. Had a chance to put it all back together (no rush, it one of our 3 Jags)
but still not that time consuming if one was under a more timely situation.
The cost:
New A-drum-225.00
ZF manual-65.00
Trans pan gasket 25.00
Esso fluid 160.00
Couple o-rings- 6.00
Few cups o' Dunkin- 10.00
So for about 500.00-ish I got it done.... not 2,000 , or 3,0000, or 4,000 which any trans place would have been robbery. To this day I cannot understand why so many people buy used cars (especially Jags) then don't have the slightest clue about them. I just saw a recent post for someone asking where to add coolant, or why the mirror was not darkening? and don't gimme that "oh you were a newbie once and probibly asked these kind of questions... Gimme a break!
Cheers

Found this reman drum in a search....
Here is the site I found. Have not had a chance to call them yet to see if they are still in business etc. Best price I have seen, 175 plus 100 for the core. Planning on replacing mine while I have the engine out putting in my new reman engine.

Whoa, that is way cheaper than the $300 one I got from transparttech or whatever it was. I think I paid $285+$100 core, which I got back. When I was disassembling the a-drum, I noticed some of my o-rings on the piston inside were torn and I couldnt get a replacement. The guy from transparttech sold me a seal kit ~$200 and overnighted it to me. It was awesome

Seal Kit?
Hey ixj8it, do you happen to remember what the seal kit was? I was reading a link about a guy rebuilding the ZF5HP24 for a land rover application and he said a similar thing about the o-rings going between the a and b drums. I am of the opinion that while I am in there I should take care of all that I can within reason. I am just a bit unsure about taking apart more than I need to. Here is the land rover post link: http://www.rangerovers.net/forum/vie...hp?f=2&t=37767

Wow. cant believe this post is still so active after all this time. There is a company called Eriksson Industries in Connecticut (1-800-388-4418) and they are VERY familiar w/ the ZF5HP24... Theyre an authorized distributor... They know exactly what seals you need. I think I paid under 100 for all the O Rings and gaskets to repair the forward A drum. There are a few gaskets and a couple of O Rings. I have the exploded view of the unit if you want (which i got from eriksson) that I can email to you... It has the part numbers and such. I thought I was in over my head, but actually only took me about an hour to fix (not counting the time to get the tranny in and out). Let me know.

I know this post is 6 months old, but if you or anyone needs some insight on pulling and installing this tranny in the XJ8 to send me a message. I am a mechanic and I just did a swap for a buddy of mine. The job can be annoying at times but I've had other cars be much worse.
The toughest part is the left side of the exhaust.
