Recurring P1638 almost everyday
I think we solved the p1121 problem by replacing the connectors of the 4 wires in the TPS harness with the wires with gold connectors per TSB 303-58. Thread weblink on next line, see my post# 12:

Last Thursday the wires are replaced. P1638 DTC problem on Saturday and again Sunday at first startup on those both days. Had P1638 at first startup also on Monday.
Ok on Tuesday through Thursday morning.
Then on Thursday early afternoon there were clicking sounds coming from engine compartment, the green and yellow warning alerts flashing, display for heat/cooling had er message, check engine light went on – all this happened when ignition was turned to position II.
Then when I started engine the tachometer went down to 0 rpms with rough idle. I erased P1638, then when I tried to start engine the check engine is on with P1638 (also P1642) and gearbox warning message.
I was able to erase both these DTC. Then I did a hard reset (removed negative battery cable, then put the negative battery cable on the battery positive post for 20 seconds).
Then I was able to drive home with no warnings and engine was running normally.
Does anyone have a permanent solution to this ongoing issue?

It looks like the codes you have point to the instrument cluster module loosing connections. As I mentioned on the other thread, that could be that module itself, any other CAN bus module or the can communication wiring. I am pretty sure the CAN does not extend to the TB, so i think this is a coincidence. BTW, what car are we talking about?I am not exactly sure how to troubleshoot the insrument pak. I hope someone else can hime in.

P1638 Can Link ECM/INSTM Circuit / Network Malfunction
Jim, you need to check the to connections at the base of the IPK (instrument pack) to do this first lower the extend the steering wheel to give you more space.
Then grip the center piece of wood trim that surrounds the clocks and pull towards you, it needs a good grip and pull. Once this is out of the way push the trip and fog switchpacks down to release the clips, pull out and unclip from the dash loom.
Next remove the black plastic clock cowl by unscrewing the 4 phillips/pozi screws, one in each corner. A magnetic screwdriver really helps here because putting them back without one needs blutack or something to hold the screws if you've no magnetic one.
Once the cowl is out of the way, you'll be able to see the 2 loom connectors at the base of the IPK. They have a lever that locks them in place on the IPK. Remove them by unclipping and swinging the lock lever up. A quick squirt of contact cleaner/wd40 on each loom connector, and replace them both, screw the cowl in, but push the trip/fog connectors through the cowl first or you'll have a swearing moment. Clip the fog/trip switchpacks back in, replace the wood and test.

You could try a battery charger on the car when you turn the key on to see if the INST PK acts normally. Try a Volt Meter on the battery when you turn the key to ON and make sure it stays above 12 Volts.
There are 5 modules on the CAN bus.
Instrument Pack is the GATEWAY to all the communications from the DLC

ECM
TCM
ABS
If the Gear Selector Illumination Module is faulty it will not let the InstPK obtain info (P1638). Possible but not likely.
There is a TSB SERVICE ACTION for the INST PK S484 but it is for the 2000MY XJ/XK.
There is also a TSB (413-03) for the earlier cars that involves inspecting the INST PK connector latch that Sean B talked about.
The CAN bus is accessed by pins 6 and 14 in the DLC. CAN high is about 2.6V and CAN low is about 2.4V.
The ABS and INST PK are at each end of the CAN bus and have terminating resistors of 120 ohms each and should have a parallel resistance of about 60 ohms at pins 6 and 14 with no power. If the resistance is not '60ish' then a CAN harness fault should be looked into.
P1638 DTC summary talks about a lack of info from the ECM engine speed and Temp to the INST PK.
I have a WDS so diagnosing is a little easier than just having an OBDII scanner and a volt meter because I can look at all the modules on the CAN bus as well as the SCP network.
Do a little more digging and tell us what you find.

wow -- very strange.
I'm a bit confused -- does the car start now?
The only time I had the strange clicking and the flashing dash was when my battery developed a short. I can't remember if it was as dramatic as yours -- but I remember hearing all the relays clicking. I'm not talking about the starter relay. This happened with the original battery when it was around 6 years old. The strange thing is it would still start the car. The only way I was able to determine it was the battery was to attach a portable jumper to the battery. When it was attached -- no problem ... removed .....I got the clicking.
These RP events are very strange. I got the strange tachometer one time another time I had the ACC flashing Err. My car's VIN (02 XJR) is outside the connector issue - but I still think the TPS is the problem with mine. Each time I have had the problem it was just as I had quickly moved the throttle - but I get no code for the TPS? I wish the TPS was available separately -- it should be!! I don't want to get a new Tbody and not have it be the problem!

P1638 issue solved

Problem was with bad circuit board in the Instrument Cluster Module.

I had Peter (my indy shop mechanic) use his professional scan tool and he said that he thought it was the Instrument Cluster Module based on the results from the scan tool reports. He did not charge any fee for the twenty minutes it took before he was sure of the results.
I also brought the Jag to the Hartford CT Jaguar dealership Service and had them confirm his findings.
They said that the Instrument Cluster had a bad circuit board and the module needed to be replaced. They charged an hour shop time that cost me $130 total.
And yes the Ebay used Instrument Cluster works flawlessly. Just a plug & play replacement. Thank Goodness.

The Ebay replacement we purchased label has it as:
April 17, 2001 LJE 4300 AB s/ w version 365
So the replacement unit from Ebay is the same part and is only one software version newer than the our existing one that went bad.
