The wire gauge appears to be 18. The pump body is about 1 & 5/16, so 24mm +/-.

I agree that the bigger connector wouldn't be a problem, electrically, but when that causes the pump to not fit in the bracket properly, then the problem arises.

You can try these Densos if you like; I'll overnight them to you. I have until December 9 to return them. They come with the "sock" already installed!

I'm going with the pumps that I ordered from Gaudin. They were only $50 a piece more than the Densos, and should be a perfect fit (trusting the parts dudes at Gaudin). You might want to, also, considering that your car is at a shop. If you go to their website (Google "jaguar parts" and they should be towards the top of the list) and enter the part number C2N 3866, I think that you'll be pleasantly surprised at the price, especially when you compare it to the JLM 20756 price.

Are you sure you didn't mean 1 5/8 inches? 1 5/16 is awfully small. Electric fuel pumps are commonly 38mm and 50mm, or 1.5 inch and 2.0 inch approximate. Do you know the main body length?

If the wire is 18 AWG, it will definitely be replaced without question.

How about 1 7/16 on the diameter. (It was 0430 this morning when I did the first measurement, and the coffee wasn't ready.) Length between the isolators is 2 5/8; from the absolute bottom to the top of the plug is 3 3/4.

I got new harnesses with the fuel pumps, so all new wires. Hopefully this lasts me another 140k miles like the originals did.

The new stuff should be here Friday; I'll let you know how it works out.

Ok. The sciencemadesimple metric converter says 1 7/16 inches, 1.4375 inches, is 36.51mm. With allowance for parallax error, that is more plausible. The 3.75 inches is 95mm.

There is a close match to a standard size which is 38mm diameter with a overall length of 113mm (4.45 inches) including the outlet hose nipple. The main body between isolators is within 2mm of the 2 5/8 you quoted.

The trick is to get the aftermarket vendor to spring a couple loose.

Looking at a ebay picture of a stock pump with bracket, it looks like the bracket could be modified to fit the next longer body length by splicing a piece of steel stock between the mounting tab and the top isolator retention ring. The bottom of the pump then stays in the same relation to the bottom of the tank.

Maybe that's why the Denso is only spec'd for up to '99. Jaguar must have changed the bracket and pump for 2000. The flow rate is not the problem, it is the physical pump dimensions.

The holidays ar a little shaky now ... shopping trips by bus are not really attractive ... and the wallet is going to be somewhat lighter.

edit: found a picture on ebay with a ruler next to the pump bracket for a '99. It is sized to fit a 80mm/3.15 inch body between the isolators.

Could you post a picture of your 2002 showing the full bracket with a ruler next to it? The bracket is almost the same design as the 1999 according to other pictures.

All those figures sound good; my parallax error is going to be a little bigger than most with my progressive lenses ...

There are two tabs on the bracket; one on the bottom that fits into a slot, and one on the top that the fixing screw goes through to hold it in the swirl pot. To modify, I think that you would have to put a piece in above the screw tab.

I'll post pics this afternoon.

Any help on the "insert images" versus thumbnails would be appreciated ...

Angry non-linear thinking

Latest update:

already told the shop that:

- the primary pump circuit is showing > 30M ohms at the relay
- the secondary pump circuit is showing 1850 ohms at the relay
- ground and supply wires are < 1 ohm
- pump does not run when directly powered

This was in the note, plus more, when the tow truck left it at the shop. And, was further discussed on the phone.

So on the phone today, they are babbling about the time they spent testing the ECM and that it is looking like the ECM.

That is the equivalent of testing the light switch when you have a burnt out bulb.

At the most, if they didn't trust my measurements, they could have redone the measurements to confirm that something was wrong inside the tank. But no, let's go and look at the ECM.

At this point, it would be better if they patched up just one pump good enough for me to limp it home where someone who knows what they are doing can get on with it.

Your pictures do show up full size when the thumbnail is clicked. I have never posted a picture to any forum, so I don't know either.

Thanks for the tip on the bottom tab. Looked at the ebay picture under magnification and it was there.

The top bit above the tab is where the surgery has to take place.

That would be ideal.

But, both pumps are dead and no towing company is going to be able to wedge it past the corner leading to my underground garage.

Gotta' play nice until the car is mobile.

But, I do not deal with unitemised bills.

Anyone know book time on R&R for the two pumps + tank?

6 hours would be my guess.

OK I already know that there will be another related thread appearing on the FP subject so this is not a hijack.

When in advanced mode, after you have inserted your thumbnail, right click on it and copy the 'copy image location/address.

Then click the square with the mountain button in the tool bar and paste your copied link. Just make sure that you don't have http: twice, depends on browser.

Now when you hit Submit, your image will appear in the body of your post.

If you get stuck, send me a PM and I'll help.

Am not familiar with an XJR, but on a XKR I would guess for a seasoned mechanic about 3 hours or so.

Jaguar warranty time is 1.8 Hours (no difference for supercharged??).
I charge 3 hours at my shop for the pump replacement but I might charge a little extra if there is a lot of gasoline that I need to drain off to get to the pump(s).
I also charge extra if there is water in the tank (like the last 2 I have done).

This also includes filter replacement labor.

Richard - thanks for the procedure for inserting images.

Boomer - it all depends on how long it takes to release the fuel lines from the tank. I tried a couple of methods from here on the forum and couldn't make them work, mostly because I couldn't find the proper material. And, I don't have a lift, so I'm rolling around on the floor. But, I did get them out without cutting them off ...

Bob G - my son lives in Justin. maybe we can get together for a pint the next time that I'm there ...

plums - I took a bunch of pictures with the ruler next to the brackett; hopefully they're useful.

This procedure Jaguar fuel pump replacement xk8 is for an XK8 but your XJ is about the same. Please check your PM, I have additional information.

Justin is about 15 or 20 miles from here!!!! pretty much just EAST.

I use the AIRTEX E2471 for the 1998 to 2000 MY XJ. I guess I never replaced the 2001MY onward in my shop with aftermarket pumps. I replaced some at the dealer with OEM parts!!!!!

I have a 2000MY XJ8 in my shop NOW for a fuel pump replacement. It's the same as my 1999 and a 1998 I just did a few weeks ago.

I see the pump part numbers changed for the 2001 MY so I guess the dimensions changed!!!

That's a pretty good article, Gus, and you're correct; not much difference in the procedure.

My problem was that the factory worker who put the big rubber seal around the fuel tank inlets was having a bad day. They are so offset from center that the tool wouldn't go on. So, I had to make something, and ended up with the below. Also a pic of the inlets and the gasket.

I'll still give you a call; I'm moving (back) to DC in February. Did you know that US 50 begins/ends in Sacramento? There's a sign at the east bound beginning that states, "Ocean City, MD 3,072."

The pictures of the E2471 scale to a length of 65mm for the barrel part when a diameter of 38mm is assumed as a baseline for the calculation. That is also my best guess is for the stock pump given the measurements provided by HiSpeed42.

The problem with the Denso 951-0008 would appear to be vendors calling a pump whatever they want. Some pictures will scale to the required 65mm and others are the 80mm form factor.

If you have a E2471 in hand you can look for a body barrel length of 65mm or so.

No reputable vendor offers a cross to any X308 beyond 1999. Ebay clone vendors, yes. But nobody else.

It may not be size. It may be unknown specifications, or a running change in pressures. There was one single mention of MY2000, engine code C as the cutoff. Was that the transition from the AJ26 to AJ27 perhaps?

It's beginning to look like OEM is the only alternative without modifying the bracket. Avos has made the point that the OEM pumps are very sturdy and have good relief valves.

There is an unreleased high performance pump that is an exact fit. Their standard size pump has a great reputation and retails for $175'ish. The problem is that the compact pump is unreleased, and may never see the light of day.

Thanks for the hours information. It gives a baseline to work from if the bill comes in at XX hours.

Neither pump makes a peep with power directly applied to through pin 87 ... but he's still mumbling stuff about "eliminating all possible faults". /sigh/
