do you mean the inhibitor switch that disables the starter motor circuit when in gear and only starts the engine when in P or N? or the brake/gearshift interface that only lets you move from P when brake pedal is pushed

Sorry i have tried to add to my garage and profile... Even have pictures posted in the album. Its a 1998 jaguar xj8l vanden plas 69k miles. Both micro switches were broken on my shifter assembly. Installed new ones, car locks when taken out of park now and hopefully this may solve my sclm issue! Love this car but really getting frustrated with it....

Hi Jamie
lock out issue might have something to do with gear shift adjustments needed.
Look at these 2 PDF files on the subject:
Transmission Brake Shift Actuator Adjustment

Transmission Selector Lever Cable Adjustment

Hi
You should look at the following forum thread on Tranny woes - view posts 4 and 5 (floor shifter position has to be synchronized with the rotary switch):

The Park and N position goes to NO (open) when de-tent is pressed. When the gear lever is of the micro-switch lever then the switch goes closed. This is a safety switch that allows the car to be started in P or N
If you think the switch is faulty then check for continuity. You should get the beep when the switch is triggered. If it works then the problem is elsewhere.
