Water pump, thermostat housing, bearings etc :)
Hello all!
Well tonight I started the Jag and after a few minutes ended up with an orange puddle under the car.
After opening the hood it looks like it's the water pump as none of the hoses are leaking and well, it's got 85k miles on it I have owned it since '06 with 43k miles and never changed it and for some time have smelled coolant but never saw it.
Well now it's on my belt and the front of the engine. Since there isn't a close Jag dealer and I need to fix it ASAP, where does everyone recommend where I buy a water pump?
Too in the attached pic do I have the old belt tensioner system or the updated? Also is my thermostat housing what I believe it to be the metal one. I figured I would replace the water pump, the thermostat, belt and bearings for the tensioner.
Any recommendations would be appreciated.
One last thing, coolant, where to get, what kind and bleeding recommendations.
Thanks all!! I have done some searches, unfortunately I didn't find a how to, if there isn't I will try and make one.
Again thank you,
Chris
If the photos are no good let me know, it was dark when I took them
Thanks again!!

There are many places an XJR can leak water. I would not change the pump unless I was sure that is the problem.
The pump should be a metal impeller one, not the plastic XJ8 unit. Yes yours has the metal thermostat housing because the XJRS all had those.
Also the tensioners everyone talks about are timing chain tensioners not belt tensioners.
Sorry i cant help much more right now i am doing this on my phone.

Thank you everyone for your input and suggestions.
Avt007, I reexamined the water pump. I started it up and had not realized it before but the shaft of the pump moves about a 1/4" in and out as it runs and while I didn't see the fluid leaking, I saw where it had been leaking below it. Too once the car was shut down I could physically move the pulley of the shaft around without any effort.
Scott, thank you, ordered an AC Delco unit for $42. Did express shipping so it came out to $64 which is still at least $25 cheaper than any auto parts store around here.
SNG, thank you, I will look to you guys in the future!
Belts look great, no cracking or wear marks so I'm thinking of just cleaning and reinstalling them
Too I found the orange coolant from Ford for $17 a gallon. Had to call around as my closest dealer wanted $30!!
Again thanks everyone!!

Water pumps are available a most autoparts stores. Getting a metal impeller is tougher though. CHANGE the belt, cheap insurance. Coventry West will sell you a complete set of hoses. The serpentine belt pulley will fail and when it does you have only a few miles
before it the engine overheats. Change it as well unless it is almost new. Jag engines
WILL NOT tolerate overheating. Investing in doing everything to keep it cool is the best money you will spend. Check on the coolant. Mine is the old green type, not orange. The owners manual should help there.

Ok, my water pump arrived, it looks like the older design as all the ones I have seen are flat w a paper gasket. It does not have the metal impeller, it's plastic. It is made in the USA.
First, is this design ok or should I be sending back?
Next it looks like one of the ports is blocked. Is this normal? I don't know as I have not removed the old one yet.
Thanks!!

Should I just go with this instead?
From the other water pump thread. https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...erpump-110389/
I'd advise getting an "Airtex" Pump. It's what Jaguar supply now and is upgraded from the old.

Asking if the airtex has a white plastic impeller, the metal replacements are not the best for a number of reasons, the black impeller is from the failure days, send it back.
I'm running AJ27S pumps, white plastic impeller, one 300k miles, 150k miles and 2k miles
AJ26 1997-99 (US, 98-00) Had failures with the black plastic impeller pump, bits fell off and blocked waterways, causing an over head event leading to valve seat damage, TSB's covered replacement to the later white impeller from the AJ27 engines.
Alloy 'impeller' replacements have little fins that cause cavitation, they're not a fluid dynamically designed replacement, like Jaguar's.

I ordered the Airtex, it has the white impeller.

Hi
You can buy the Prestone DEX-COOL® 50/50 Prediluted Extended Life Antifreeze/Coolant for $11.99 per gallon at your local Advance Auto Parts store.
I bought 3 gallons to flush and refill our XJ8.
Rock Auto Parts also sells the Airtex pump for your XJ8 - I would ask them if theirs has the white coated fan.

Gents:
I have followed this thread with interest and I appreciate everyone's contributions. I've learned something! ...But, I gotta tell you, and perhaps I'm just a natural cynic, the impeller fear sounds more like an old wive's tale. Has somebody done a study about this that can be pointed to? Until now, I've only ever seen folks recommend replacing the plastic models for metal; and I have read about folks needing to replace plastic water pumps more than once. Additionally, I've got to think that there are now gobs of these early XJ8s running around with metal replacements with no problems at all - including mine, I believe. I understand that there is a difference between the black plastic and the white plastic version, which I can only hope solves the problem of the plastic breaking down in time sitting in those chemicals. But given the choice, I'm not sure I would take the chance.
Then again… I'm no scientist!
Still curious,
Scott

I'm sure XJ8/XJR are the same pump?

Got it replaced on Monday!
I went the short route( didn't replace the belts or the bearings on the pulleys) as it was chilly in the garage and will do that and tensioners in the spring. Took maybe 30 minutes in total(didn't remove the supercharger belt or fan assembly) and got the fluid back in it.
Runs so much quieter!
Too with all this snow and my gf having surgery on her foot, my car has been in the garage nice and clean for about the last month as we have been hit w enough snow, salt and cold. so I'm happy about that.

There has been way to much paranoia about plastic impellors.
Granted, yes, the original fitment black plastic impellors did give trouble on SOME engines and far too may were replaced cart blanque.
The white impellors are the same being used on the latest pumps for X350's
The metal impellor pumps are not the answer and are not as efficient or as well designed as the white plastic impellor pumps.
They seem to suffer from cavitation erosion whereas the white plastic ones don't.

Coolant Pumps - Identifying Impeller Material - Pump Replacement
Guidelines
Issue:
A large number of V8 coolant pumps are replaced unnecessarily for the
following reasons:
^ routinely following an engine overheat condition,
^ incorrect diagnosis of leakage, or
^ incorrect identification of impeller material.
As a result, a significant proportion of warranty returns have been
identified with no fault found.
Action:
Note the following guidelines before replacing a V8 coolant pump:
OVERHEATING
Before replacing the coolant pump following an overheating condition,
observe the following guidelines:
VIN 001036-028000 (XK series) and VIN 812256-843500 (V8 XJ series)
Check the part number on the body of the coolant pump, following the
procedure below. Replace the coolant pump if the part number is:
96JV-8501-CA,
96JV-8501-CB,
96JV-8501-CC or
96JV-8501-CD
Checking coolant pump part number:
This is locatewd on the left at about 8 0'clock.
Note: For all affected model years refer to JTIS procedure for
1998 MY V8 XJ and XK series vehicles.
The procedure is not listed under any other model year.
2. Check coolant pump part number. If any of the part numbers
are as follows:
96JV-8501-CA, CB, CC or CD, replace the coolant pump.
(Illustration 1).
3. Install the coolant pump pulley. (See Workshop Manual, JTIS
CD ROM, section: 303-03, SRO 26.50.05).
Note: For all affected model years refer to JTIS procedure for
1998 MY V8 XJ and XK series vehicles.
The procedure is not listed under any other model year.
VIN 028001-on (XK series) and VIN 843501-on (V8 XJ series)
It is not necessary to remove the coolant pump pulley for
inspection unless there is a genuine coolant pump concern.
Do not replace these coolant pumps as a matter of Policy.
LEAKAGE
Note: Do not assume that staining around the exterior of the coolant
pump body is due to a coolant pump leak. Check the cooling system
joints, for leaks, in the area above the coolant pump. For any cooling
system issues follow the workshop procedure as detailed in JTIS for
checking/diagnosing the cooling system.
On replacement engines, it is not necessary to replace the coolant…..
……pump, unless the coolant pump being transferred has one of the part
numbers listed above.
IDENTIFYING COOLANT PUMP IMPELLER MATERIAL
Note: Do not automatically assume that a black impeller is made of
Nylon 66.
The latest pumps use
White Poly Phenyl Suphide fitted from V8 Vin range 843501 to F59525
