X308 - silent turn signal clicker
A while ago the clicker as well as the chime reminder that the headlights were on after turning off the car stopped working. The turn signal lights work fine. With summer upon us and with the car sitting in the sun with the windows up it now works - at least until the car cools off. My mechanic wants to go "exploring" - time and materials of course. Any ideas??

Funny that, my latest car purchase, an MG TF has a silent "clicker" when I signal to turn right, but its OK when I indicate to turn left ! Indicators work perfectly. So whatever it is that make the sounds seems to have failed. It may be a software generated noise output on a speaker, so the speaker may have failed. Any other tones missing ?

My problem is with a 2003 Jag XJ8 although this was my first "post" so I'm not sure it was clear. Is there a way to edit my question to include that info? As to your question, the only other tones not working properly that I know of is for the chime which sounds then the headlights are on manual and I turn off the auto.

The clicking and chiming sounds you hear are actually produced by an old-fashioned speaker inside the steering column cover. Look closely at the column near the ignition and you'll see the small holes where the sound comes out.
Remove the attaching screws underneath the column, remove the plastic column cover trim, and you will see the speaker on the right side. They do go bad. You can find a replacement at Radio Shack, your favorite electronic parts store, or online.
