Default XJ8 2001 Headlight Problem

Advice sought - headlights decided to stop working. Sidelights OK, high beam works on pass only, fog lights good. Have checked fuses and relays which are all OK. Haven't had time to have a good look yet - does anyone know if this is a common fault (may save me some time).

This same thing just happened to mine. The pilot lamps (sidelights) in the inner headlights work, but the main headlights both stopped working at the same time. Any ideas?

Check the switch, it is a two position switch (three with the auto feature). The first turns on the dawn/dusk lights, the second turns on the headlights.

Check the obvious stuff first -- fuses and I have had both lights go out on me .. it does happen .... then look for the relay.Do the Highs work?

The whole car is controlled by relays and they do fail --- many times you can switch them out with another one for testing since many are the same ... this is a very common failure when the wipers stop working.

Maybe Jim can post the relay location.

Mine ended up being a broken wire solder point on the switch stalk. I removed the air bag, then the steering wheel and the upper and lower steering column covers. Then I unbolted the switch so I could get to the back of it and found the light blue wire broken away from its soldered connector. The wire seemed too short, so I spliced and soldered an extension on it, shrink tubed it and then resoldered the wire to the switch. Everything works fine now. Pretty easy job. Just remember to put the steering column in the lowest position, then disconnect the battery to kill power to the airbag before unscrewing the torx fasteners at the back of the wheel to remove the bag.

There is also a "wait time" after disconnecting the battery when working on airbags. Something like 5 minutes.

I had the same problem. The worst part of my story was that all my headlights stopped working at midnight while driving on a highway. I was overtaking another car, I turned on the winkers and when the left stalk switched back my car came to the dark side of the force Thanks God I managed to stop the car before being hit by someone.

My suggestion is to renew all soldering in the left column stalk because it ended being the reason for the non-working TRIP button for me as well... Unfortunately Jaguar had made a huge mistake - instead of using cable connectors on a moving switch they did a soldering which is very vulnerable...

Even a better idea is to touch the + and the - AFTER DISCONNECTING THEM FROM THE BATTERY!!! This will clean all the electrical capacitors.

Here is what the JTIS says about removing the steering wheel: https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...04/#post482786

My 2001 Jag XJR is doing the same thing. At first whenever you turn on the turning signal, my low beams go out. Once the turning signal is turned off, my low beams turn back on. Now, my low beam headlight wont come on at all. My high beams work fine but i have to manually hold the passing high beam lever to keep it on. This almost sounds like a ground issue. Any suggestions?

The relays for the Main & Dipped beams are controlled & energised by the Body Processor Module-the BPM. This receives it's intructions from the column lighting stalk switch.

So you've either got a failed column lighting switch/solder joints-as mentioned on here above, or the BPM may be faulty.
