Locking and Unlocking

I have a 2006 XJ8 and have a recurring problem with locking/unlocking the doors with the remote. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't but it isn't a battery problem. Same problem with my previous car, a 2000 S-Type. I used to have the dealer fix it via re-programming but they charged about $200 each time. I asked Sports Car Parts in Calgary about this and they told me the dealer is the only one who can do this. Does anyone know if this is the case and if any other options are available? I don't mind paying for an occasional thing but this seems to a Jaguar "make-work project".

Thanks, Stu - I will try that or alternately obtain a new one(s) from eBay. The trunk release button works even if the door lock/unlock does not The panic button only works if the locking/unlocking function works. I've had the battery tested a few times and it always comes up fine so perhaps it is the fob but to have it fail on each of two new vehicles and within a relatively short space of time is very poor, I would say.

Often times it is the little micro button that sits under the rubber pad that goes bad. You can tell when they are going bad because they wear and then don't have a defined crisp click to them. Easyest way is to buy a remote off Ebay and follow my remote reprogramming procedure that are posted under the 'how to' section on this x350 site that PSG is pointing out. I see a person on Ebay sells just the micro buttons but you would have to be handy at desoldering the old micro button and soldering in the new one, they are very small.

There was a recall on the 2005 FOB's...don't know if it continued to 2006 or not. They were using a foam pad internally that shorted and destroyed the electronics. Happened to one of my 2 FOB's. jag USA were pretty rude. It seems they discontinued the recall before I found out about it, even though they never attempted to contact me.

There was a Key Fob Technical Service Bulletin issued Oct. 13, 2006 # S527 Revision 3
Check for the Key Fob part number '1X43 15K601 AJ' located on the inside of the key fobs when you pull the upper and lower portions apart. If the part number is an “AJ” meaning 1X43 15K601 AJ, no further action is necessary. If the part number is NOT 1X43 15K601 AJ (meaning AB through AG), perform the "Install Insulating Foam Pad" section below on affected fobs per the bulletin. Jaguar noticed that Key fobs AB through AG would build up static electricity inside and thus my not always open the car door. To eliminate this issue, Jaguar did a recall and put an anti-static foam pad inside the key fob. The “AJ” series of key fob was upgraded by Jaguar to avoid this problem so it does not need the foam pad.
