Smoked out lights with design! XJR
After searching the internet I did not find anyone smoking out their XJR lights. I love my car but never thought the back of it gave the impression that it was fast and sporty. The lights are too plain in my opinion.
Just like my previous X-type, I decided to trace the factory design of the tail lights with tape and then smoking out the rest.
If you do it this way you will NEVER get a ticket by the cops and it is 100% legal. It also looks wayyyy better than the all black smoked look. Looks more custom too!
When you go to the store to buy the can of transparent lens paint, do NOT buy the commonly used VHT night shades!!! This product is totally crap, trust me.
It will look cheap, uneven, and flaky when you spray it on! I actually tried it because it was on sale for $10, and it was a waste of time and money. I had to strip all the paint off my lights the very next day and use the better product, which is Rust-oleum Lens tint!
This product sprays evenly, dries fast, doesn't run, and it very durable. You don't even need clear coat with this stuff and it will last through infinite powerful car washes!
If you do this to your lights, clean them really good first, then spray a very light coat and wait 15 minutes between each additional coat. When you are done, wait a couple hours before peeling off the tape! make sure you use painters tape, it will peel off the plastic easily without leave and stickiness! If you have any other questions, ask away!

Ok I reloaded the pictures. Let me know what yall think. Everyone has their own opinion, but I personally love the new look and I am looking forward to customizing my XJR more in the near future! My next goal will be to change out the front grill to the Mina Gallery design like my X-type had!

Yeah, got to say it looks ok.. Not sure I'm fussed either way, ie hugely for or against, but it does look a little more modern perhaps - reminds me of the newer Land Rover clusters with the black lines on them..
Good work in being original!!
Just need to LED them now...

+1 for the Rustoleum Lens Tint. I very lightly smoked my tail lights last year and they still look great. I wanted to give them that dark ruby red look that the old XJ40s had. After letting them dry for a day or two, I lightly wetsanded with super low grit to get rid of any orange peel effect, and polished to a good shine. Never had any trouble with the law yet (and in LA, they look for any reason to pull you over). I think if it were any other car, you might have trouble with tinted lights, but the XJ gets a pass a lot of the time (knock wood).

The only one im having a problem with is the reverse bulb - it's obviously getting some current from somewhere as it comes on (allbeit weakly) when the car is unlocked.

I was having the same issue. I had to get non polarized LEDs and resistors from Superbrightleds.com. Works perfectly now.
