The engines were made by Ford in their factory in Bridgend, Wales. Ford are closing this factory and Jaguar have purchased the production machinery for the V8 and moved it to their factory in Wolverhampton where production will carry on. The V8 is still a market requirement in many countries, especially the USA. However, how much longer it will remain in production is an open question.

mfosterjdc, to say that ford made the engine is a bit wrong. Are there a significant number of parts that are Ford. Yes, just look under the hood at all the ford ovals. Where the difference comes is jaguar would get their "pick of the litter" and get to pick the parts that they wanted. They would then put the parts through additional measurements and whatnot to match up parts to make the engines perform a little better and be more balanced (for example, they would weigh the pistons and find a set of 8 that were very close in weight to each other vice allowing a bigger tolerance). The engine block is different. So, it is defnitely not 100% Ford. But, there is a significant fraction that is.
As for the tranny, that is not a Ford product at all. That is a "generic" transmission made by a company called ZF. ZF makes transmissions for most car companies. So, I guess you could call it a Ford tranny, but it is as much a chevy, Mazda, or Nissan tranny in that regards. The 6HP26/28 (what is in your car) is also used in BMW's and other higher end cars because of the power capabilities that the tranny has. As for the cost of the service, they are a bit high, but not that much. You are going to get hit for 3 hours of service. So, that is going to be $300-400 right there (most shops are charging around $100 an hour for service). Then you start looking at where you buy the parts from, I can see where you could easily get the price up to $800. I bought my own parts and then had a shop drop the pan and fill the system and do an internal inspection and that ran me like $250 for the work and around $225 for the oil and pan. Now, I did buy a few extra bottles just to make sure I had enough fluid. So, that added to the cost. But, I was still nearing $500 for the tranny service and trying to save money in the process.
