Default 2012 Paddle Shift behavior

Hello All -
In my 2012 XJL (V8) the paddle shifters are disabled in D. I have a 2016 XF where the shifters are enabled in D, and I would like to get the XJ to behave the same - as the downshift shift control is handy periodically in the hills but I don't want the more aggressive shifting of the S mode. Can the programming be adjusted on the XJ so that the XF behave the same?

I did see a similar thread from 2012 with the XF (https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...-s-mode-59020/), so I am hopeful that this could be done.
Thx!

Do you have the menu option shown in Stuart's post linked below?
https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...5/#post1369610

My 2010 has that menu, but the other thread suggests some (US spec?) vehicles do not.
It is certainly something which can be changed through CCF programming, and it may be that the UI is also configured in the same way.

Yeah, when I took it to the dealer they tried to find the menu you show, but my car doesn't have the option.

I have attached pages 5 and 6 from the 2013 factory product brief that the dealers are sent that explains the paddle availability in "D" and by conclusion was not available in prior years.

The wording does imply that the user-selection option was introduced a year after my car. I will probably need to change it through the dealer - maybe show them the XF thread and try to find it that way. Thanks for the look!

my 2011 manual states D manual paddle shift is only available in supercharged versions.

The dealer might not be able to do what you want. Your 2012 has the 6-speed transmission and it might not support paddle shifting in D, but I don't know for sure. The 8-speed was introduced in 2013 with paddle shifting in D as described above.

I agree with Lightspeed, I also read it was only available in supercharged variants for the early year models (2010-2012). It has been available since the beginning, as my very early 2010 s/c has this feature.

I have a 2012 5.0 SC that has the same trans as the 5.0 so it wouldn't be the trans that would not be able to do it. It has to be the software. Mine can use the paddles in D anytime I want.

Thanks all for the time. Knowing that the SC version can activate the paddles in D, I tend to agree with amlarson2001 that it likely only a software parameter. Whether this is something that can be flipped with a diagnostic tool sounds like a dealer question I guess...

Thanks for the link, it was different than what I had found. I talked with the shop foreman at the dealership and he thought that they could do it - seems that the function is available. We'll see what really happens next week. Let you know...

Well, it is done - paddles work in D now! Took it to the dealer and in exchange for an hour of labor they flipped the switch using the diagnostic tool. No mentions of any policies getting in the way, and given that Jaguar gave the functionality over to owner control a year later in 2013 I didn't suspect they would balk in 2020. Having the forum information handy certainly helped to shape the initial conversation with the dealer, so thank you all for the comments and details!
Cheers!

Cool to know. Glad your car can be the way you want it for little cost.

Thats great news, glad the dealer did not let policy get in the way, i find manual down shifts in D convenient as opposed to relying on kickdown by having to floor it, getting the revs up before you accelerate helps with boost pressure so you can move as needed when you depress the go pedal.....enjoy

I have a 2012 Jaguar NA V8, and my paddle shifters work in drive. I would like to do the opposite of you though. I would like for them NOT to work in drive. I don't want to use paddle shifters, and occasionally, I accidentally hit the paddle shifter. After doing it a couple times, and having to wait until it exited manual mode, I looked up how to disable it right away if you accidentally hit it. Now that I know how, it isn't worth it for me to go to the dealer to get it disabled.

Interesting. I wonder why your model was default programmed the other way.

If you want to disable the paddles in all modes you can always just unscrew them, disconnect the connectors, then screw them back on again. It can all be accessed behind the wheel without removing it (turn 90 degrees left then right to get access to the screws).

I am in the UAE. I imagine that different regions have different defaults and options. Just like my car has 18 inch wheels, and according to the door panel label, an option to put 19 or 20 inch instead. From internet searches on western-country centric websites, it appears they won't come with 18 inch anywhere else. Also, GCC spec cars require the warning when you exceed 120kph(even though the most common speed limit in Abu Dhabi has been 140kph for a while now). Also, supposedly, GCC spec cars have better cooling and air conditioning systems.

interresting, I read about 18 inch wheels being homologated but never could find any more infos.

Could you post a picture of the door panel label and/or give the dimensions front and rear plus load and speed index?

Could be useful for winter tyres...

Many thanks !
