RObin, hopefully you have a check engine light. Get the codes read at a local auto parts place and post the code(s) here. With the info that you have posted, it could be way too many things and trying to have you go through all of them would be very costly. We will help, we just need a little bit more information to help.

If you see white smoke and smell raw fuel it is almost always a stuck injector. But you should definitely buy an OBD scanner, they are the best diagnostic tool money can buy.

RObin, if they are telling you that because you own a jag, that they don't have a reader to read the codes, they are full of it. Tell them to connect their code reader and give us that information. Your Jag does not use anything special for the more simple codes like what are seen for the engine. yes, if you get into the enhanced codes (ie, the 7 digit ones), then yes, they don't have a reader for those. But, all we need are the 5 digit ones (P and 4 numbers) to get you going in the right direction.

This will work for you, then you just have to download the "Torque" app for your android phone. If you have an Apple phone, you will need to find an amp that reads OBD codes.
Thru Amazon: Again, download the Torque app and you are golden.
Using it is simple. Under the steering column on the left side, there is an opening that the blue piece will plug into. Leave your foot off of the brake and press the START/STOP button. This will turn on the car but not start the engine. Open up the app and press the gear indicator. From there, you can select "Fault Codes" and then "Show Logged Fault Codes". Tell us what is listed on your phone and we can help you out.

RobinHill, the code you have is for a misfire on cylinder #5. Could it be the fuel line pressure being too high, sure. But, I also think that you would be seeing this problem on many other cylinders too since all the fuel injectors share a common fuel rail. So, too high of pressure on one fuel injector is seen on all of them. How many miles are on your current set of plugs. Odds are, your problem is either associated with the coil or the plug itself. If you are nearing 100K miles on your car, then I would say to start with a plug change and during the plug change, have the coils visually inspected for any signs of failure. See what you have at that point.

RobinHill, from what you are describing, you have a failed open fuel injector. That would cause all the problems that you are seeing, even the misfires on the other cylinders (computer has to "guess" when the reading on the O2 sensor is associated to a specific cylinder. It will sometimes get the timing off a little bit, especially wiht the engine going up and down in RPMs.
Big thing thta I would tell you not to do is to turn the car on and not have the engine running. A fellow member here had a similiar problem and he hydrolocked his engine. It was easy to clear, but he was blowing a 400 amp fuse in his car due to the starter not being able to roll the engine.

I just went thru this same thing. I was driving home form work and the car started missing. Continued to drive home and gas was literally pouring out of the exhaust.
Had to replace the #5 cylinder fuel injector. I ordered the Bosch replacement part from Rock Auto. After mechanic got thje injector in, discovered 1 of the oxygen sensors also needed replaced. Total bill was ~$1450
Im a little nervous another injector could go bad. Thinking about getting rid of it.
It may have been just a fluke that it went bad too.....
