2014 XJL 18K - Market Drop $3K in 2 months?
Was trading in a XJL 2014 for a new F-Pace, and made a deal for a $46K trade value. I then ordered the F-Pace, and when it arrived, I received a note that they could now only give me $43K. The difference was described as a marketplace correction since the XJ's are in the ports and huge rebates are being given by JLRNA to move the cars.
I like to think my dealer is trustworthy, but needed to vet this on the forum. What are your thoughts? 2 months $3k??? That is a huge fall out. Of note, I offered to give them the car 2 months ago, and they said they couldn't take it at the time.

Why split the difference? What the dealer told you sounds to me like a classic "bait-and-switch". I wouldn't cave in just yet, without knowing more.
The paperwork you signed, if any, is important to determine your course of action.
When you made the deal for the $46K trade value, did you sign a Retail Order Form on that dealer's letterhead? If so, and you have a copy of that form, you have a legally enforceable contract and should be able to hold that dealer's feet to the fire...unless... that document has a provision that lets the dealer change that trade-in value before delivery.

To your point one would think that a document to "SEAL THE DEAL" signed would have taken place. I asked for this but due to the ordering process, prices not being tightened up yet by Jaguar due to the newness of the vehicle etc., there wasn't a doc. Odd, but a handshake deal (not the first car I bought from the dealer). If there was a doc, there is a clause on the market fluctuations in "FINE PRINT". The size of the modification is what gets me....$3000.00 is a chunk out of the deal plus $200 for tax shield loss.
Unfortunately, the F-Pace is a hot seller right now and if you don't take it on his terms he has another buyer for it who will. I know that because my brother-in-law has been waiting months for his. You will have an uphill battle to get him to meet you halfway.
Good luck, and let us know what happens.

Even though MSRP on the F-Pace was undetermined when you made the deal, is it in the ballpark you expected? Higher? Lower? When trading, the only figure that really matters is the bottom line. If that bottom line is truly $3000 higher than the original quote, I think I would walk away and wait for them to call me, or I would at least shop around a couple of other dealerships.

Why trade in an XJL for an F Pace? I can't see letting that beautiful and only 2 year old XJL go for an F Pace.
But, I was in a similar situation a few years ago when I got a $3000 price difference on a new 2009 truck from 2 different salespersons. After expressing my concerns to one of the salespersons I then decided to walk away.
If I were in your shoes I'd express my concerns to the appropriate individual at the dealership about this price difference and if they would not give you what was initially agreed, I'd say I am going to deal w/ another dealership and/or keep my XJL.

I was sort of perplexed by that too, but it's not my place to judge. As my mother always said, "Different strokes for different folks!"
