Thank you for the post!
That's some great news. Jaguar has been very busy for sure, with the baby XF on it's way......

We all walk around with iphones in our pockets. Is it necessary? Absolutely not! There is still huge market for it, to drive Apple to prominence.
Bentley has been shoving W12s in 4 door sedans that weight as much as a full frame Expedition and sprint 0-60 in less time than a Corvette. And, they sold more cars this year than ever.
The XJ SC is just as unnecessary, when compared to the NA 5 liter. And, it is, if are solely discussing a need. How often can you really use all that power?
To conclude my statement, Jaguar is about exclusivity and all they are doing is expanding even more in that segment.

Well one thing that one must consider when thinking about power levels is not the top speed capability but how it affects everyday drivability. That extra power for the average driver means better passing potential and overall just better responsiveness.
This car could probably function with a N/A V6 but when your merging into highway traffic, I bet you'll be wishing for that extra giddy up!
If you do local street driving primarily then yeah, 500+ horses is a little silly (in a good way) !!!!!

I wonder if they will keep the supersport trim? The funny thing about all the supercharged variants is that all this extra power is just a re-tuning of the ECU, they don't even have to make any changes to the engine components to achieve almost 100 hp more than the 470 hp supercharged trim. Just goes to show how conservatively tuned the regular supercharged version is from the factory.

actually, i think Jag is making a mess with the model lineup (unless they plan on removing some)
you've got:
base
portfolio
supercharged
supersport
ultimate
......all of these come in SWB and LWB. and now they want add an R?
First of all, the difference between base and portfolio is negligible...they might as well get rid of portolio and just go straight to supercharged. change supersport to XJR....and i dont even know what the difference is for ultimate (im guessing its their SuperV8)

My XKR is the kind of car where *I* want the power...the XJ/L is a luxury liner. I understand the points about having more power for passing and driving and I agree with those points.
So if you want 700hp in your XJ I guess that's fine. I personally am not buying an XJL as a high performance race/track/whatever car. That's what I got my XKR for...
I'm not "dissing" anyone that wants the 550Hp in the XJ/L...

My favorite topic...... need vs want.

I was speaking to the car. The XJ/L with a SC engine is fine...the extra power for the weight of the car can be used in many ways to compliment the driveability of the car.
550Hp? If one wants the extra horse that's fine...It first struck me as not necessary for this luxury car given the availability of the SC engine. Maybe that reaction was to knee-jerk.

I think they should have invested the time and money on designing a new nav/sound cluster first, to replace this "thing" that now runs on 1950's Nasa technology, forget any "R" versions of anything.
If their "R" XJ is trying to compete the German's AMG or M, or the (laughable) LS F-Sport attempt from Lexus, they better pull out their 8086 processors from their nav clusters and put something there that won't give you a tracking number for every chosen screen function.

I'm sure that Jaguar will find buyers for the R-model. They always do. But, it won't be me, as I am perfectly happy with my 385 HP XJL. It is big and luxurious and I do not consider it as a sports model to toss around so, 4.4 sec. 0-60 is not relevant for me. Just like with the Rolls of years past, they did not even list the HP or the 0-60 times, the factory spec stated that the power levels were "adequate".
I think Jaguar feels that they need to compete with the other premium brands that tend to have price/performance leader models. Most people, outside of living in Germany, will hardly ever take advantage of those power levels. Heck, my NA XJL was tested 0-60 at 4.9 sec. by MotorTrend. Adequate for my everyday usage!
