They already have the XKR-S and now the XKR-S GT. are you saying they should introduce a new 2 door model along the lines of Audi S5 or BMW M6?

To understand the motif for 550HP XJ-R one only has to look at competition.
In $120K price range XJ-R is competing against CLS63, M5 and Panamera. All of them are in mid 500s HP range. You simply have to at very least match it, at best beat it.
It would be nice if they got to 600HP. Which is not that hard.
At some time you have to be the leader.
Will they sell thousands, no. Likely several hundred, but it is their most powerful model and it attracts attention. That is exactly why it exists.

It does not matter what you think it should compete against.
Buyers are looking at price and HP. XJR is at the same price point as CLS63, M5 and Panamera S. This is what my clients are comparing it to.
In the end of the day it is about their lease payment, car prestige, wow factor and - yes, HP. Which very likely they will only use fully once a week, traffic permiting.

XJ-R is between $15-20k more than every single car you stated.
If the XJ-R comepetes the M5, that would place the XFR in the M3's segment.
You should contact Jaguar and propose that serendipty. Obviously they are missing out on a huge market share. Only if they had a competitor agianst the S class and the 7 series.

The fact of the matter is Jaguar was always going to build an XJR because they have always had an XJR. And in comparison to its competition which is the A8, 750iL, Panamera, S-Class it was absolutely necessary to have an R class XJ. The Audi S8 is faster than the Supersport and there is still an RS level after that. They could technical merge the Supercharged and Supersport and just have the Supercharged at 510 Hp seeing that its just retuning of the ECU.
I personally would never compare the CLS63 and M5 against the XJR just like I would compare the XJ against the CLS and 5 series. Totally different class. They are more comparable to the XFR-S. My question is will there be a XJR-S. Jaguar definitely needs to get there car naming convention in order. Supercharged, Supersport, and Ultimate needs to go away.
And whether the HP is needed or not shouldnt even come into play. If we use that logic does any car in America need to go faster than 85 MPH? I take my car to the limiter on a regular basis. 85mph is slow for me.
