Default 5.0 SC Power Upgrade

Hi Everyone,

I have a 2011 XJL SC with the standard 470hp. I know that year they also produced the Supersport model with 510hp. On paper, the engines look the same, I was curious if there was a difference between them? Has anyone had success upgrading their engine to the 510hp? I'm sure a 40hp bump would be nice, but I'm really interested in getting the torque up to the Supersport spec - going from 424lb-ft to 461lb-ft. Are any different components used in the drivetrain or is it simply an ECU flash?

a6kmita, one of the members here bumped his up to around 620 hp. Cost him about $1000 to do. In short, the difference between the 470 hp and 510 hp engines is really only a tune in the ECU. With that being said, you can spend $300 on an undersized pulley which is what they use on the 550 hp versions that got put into the newer cars (using the 510 hp tune). So, if you can find a dealership that is willing, you can pay them for an hour of shop time and they can put in the more powerful tune.

From there, you will need to find a tuner shop that is familiar with the Ford 5.0L engines. They will have a fairly good grasp of what your engine is capable of. From there, you can pay them around $400 or so and they will take the higher hp tune that Jaguar has and tweak it out some to get you up around 620 hp.

I am sure if you open up the exhaust some and get the freer flowing intake used on the XFR's (supposedly bolts right up to the 5.0L SC engine used in the XJ's with minimal tweaks), you might be able to get even more than 620 hp.

Thanks a ton for the insight, Thermo!!! Seems much less complicated than I thought and seems like I'll have a lot more opportunity for power gains than I was expecting. Any idea who the member might be that did the mod? I'd like to talk to him and see what he did.

Also, I heard that the AJV8 and the Coyote engine were similar, but it sounds like they must share a lot more components than I thought!

I just hope the 6-speed transmission can handle all that power!

Intake: Cold air and/or K&N filter
Exhaust: 200 cell (high flow) cats , remove rear mufflers, replace first resonator with x-pipe
Supercharger: steig port & smaller pulley
ECU: Tune
Power Adder: wet nitrous kit (push the limits of the engine/tranny/rear)

Intake ~100-300
Exhaust ~1200
Tune ~1000
Port & pulley ~1200
Expected bhp: ~700bhp (~600rwhp)

Correct

What? No. There is no difference in pulley's from the factory.

The 510PS and 550PS engines are exactly the same, it's just in the tune.

A dealer is not going to do this for you. Although yes it is possible to flash the 550PS tune into a 470PS car.

Huh? What's Ford got to do with it?

Well, if you know someone who will do a tune for $400, give us the names!

Yes, improving the exhaust, especially by fitting an x-pipe, is a very good idea.

They are similar in that they are both 5.0L quad-cam V8's, but there are no shared parts between them, at all.

Transmission is not what you have to worry about!

There are a number of tuners who are sponsors of this forum, who can do a pulley & tune and get you 600+ hp.

In no particular order:

VelocityAP
Eurocharged
Eurotoys
ECU Tuning Group
RSC Tuning

They all offer such packages.

Welcome to the family! My car dynoed at 520whp 500lbft to the wheels with the modifications that people on here specified. The car is a different animal now. And the fact is, no really expects an XJL to go really fast but I gotta say these cars move! Easily the fastest car I have ever owned hands down.

Sounds great, Johncy2000! I just read your post on getting your supercharger replaced under warranty. Was that determined to be the result of the mods that you did? I'd be hesitant to perform too many, especially since I'm going to have to be considering purchasing an extended warranty soon (not sure if that will cover modifications with aftermarket parts). Any videos of your exhaust sound/setup? Also, has your trans held up ok with handling the extra power?

a6kmita, from my experience in talking with the aftermarket extended warrantees, they only cover the stock vehicle. Once they find that it has been modified, they will not cover that part of the car. Worst case, call them up, tell them what you want to do and see what they say. If they say that they will cover the car, make sure it is in writing that they under stand what has been modified and that they agree to cover it. I find when I get the calls that the warrantee on my vehicle is expired and they want to cover me, the quickest way to get them to hang up is to say that you have done a lot of motor mods. They normally end the car with a "sorry, we can't help you, have a nice day".

I have 2011XJ Super Sports 510hp.
I am looking to kick it up and need address
for a shop near Washington DC. or NYC
Right now the 510hp is amazing. With the right driver it will 0 to 60 under 4.0
Driving from Gettysburg Pa to Springfield Ill I hit 139mpr and it felt like 60.
With 35,000 miles this passed month, I am taking opportunities to push her a little.

Check out my Channel on YouTube.

@Johncy2000

Also the ZF Trans is very good at handling the power of this car. There is no hesitation what so ever or slippage. Gears also clap into gear!

It's more like 600hp with bolt ons.

How invisible are these tunes if you reverted to stock before a dealer visit?

Johnny do you still have this car and the tune? How was/is the transmission behaving as all ZS6H and 8H used in XJ-series have Max. allowable Torque of 515 lb-ft. Thanks

I sold the car a few years ago. The extended warranty expired and was afraid to keep the car without a warranty. The transmission was fine with the mods I had on the car and held up great. No slipping.

Good to know. How long did you have the car with the tune on? What was the crankHP/Torque which resulted in this impressive WHP/Torque numbers ?

Yes, there are well known tuners VelocityAP, Mina, Eurotoys, etc which can take your supercharged car upto 575HP and even beyond.
I think the weakest link is the torque limit on the ZF transmission of 515 lb-ft. .... how prudent it is to go higher
