Exclamation 5 Questions For XJ (351) owners Please Respond

I have two questions for current 2011 xj owners
I am looking to buy one this tax season I have saved my money and this will be my first 40k plus car. I have two questions
1.
How is the insurance rates versus average cars big jump little jump ?
2.
What should I look for on 2011 xj's I heard the fuel or water pump had a revision and the roof knocking are there any other issues I should really pay attention to.
3.
Whats the best warranty services used by most in the forum
4.
Whats the maintenance figures looking like on an xj.
5.
Lastly are there any red flags that i really need to know about.

Thank you to all the forum users, I have been lurking on this forum for 6 months reading everyone's post learning alot. I have owned lots of cars 14 to be exact, but none as pricey as a Jaguar. Im kinda young 36 and the first car I drove in my life was my grandfathers 1994 xj majestic and I said one day I would own an xj. Im in the position where I might be pushing it but you only live once and this will be my present to myself for finishing my masters degree. I appreciate all the help and the response that anyone gives me. Thanks in advance.

1. One man's big is another man's little, so ask your insurance carrier. 2. I haven't had any issues with mine except low battery warnings because the car has enough lights to light up Times Square on New Years Eve. 3. Jaguars warranty covers "wear-out" items most don't' 4. Due to the comprehensive warranty, maintenance costs are rather nominal, but accessories and non-warranty covered replacement parts are very expensive. 5. Just the usual for a used car. Take your time, choose carefully, test drive and inspect it thoroughly. The car requires premium gasoline and doesn't provide high fuel economy. Depreciation costs are very considerable, so don't consider this an investment by any stretch of your imagination.

2011 models included free maintenance for 5 yrs/50,000 miles so if you shop carefully, you should be able to find one with a year or more left on the maintenance.

The 5.0l engine across all the Jaguar models does have issues with leaking water pumps. My XJ had it replaced when the car was only 6 months old but haven't had problems with it since. As far as I know, this doesn't apply to the v6 models, but there was no v6 XJ for 2011 from what I recall.

Is there a revised waterpump, or do the replacements also leak?

from what I've read on the XF & XK sections, it's been revised multiple times. Seems to be an issue with back-pressure due to the hose routing from what I've read. There hasn't been a lot of reports here on the XJ side so probably not a big deal. In fact, I'm the only one that's reported a water pump failure on the XJ here that I can recall.

Well, you can add me to the list. I have a 2012 XJL and had my water pump replaced last September (1.5 yrs. in service) because it was leaking.

No need to ask others what they pay and then try to extrapolate the data to get an estimate. You can simply call your own insurance company, tell them that you are considering purchasing a 2011 XJ, and then they can tell you exactly what your coverage will cost.

The water pump has been revised at least twice so far for the 5.0L V-8 but the good thing is the pump is pretty cheap and it seems to only leak so it does not strand you on the side of the road.

But painful failure anyway!

Water pump mechanical face seal leakage will eventually lead to water pump bearing failure, thus total pump failure, which can cause immediate engine overheating, seizing and catastrophic failure. Coolant leakage from the pump can also cause slippage of drive belts, which in turn can cause loss of power assisted steering causing you to drive off a bridge, cliff, or simply run over innocent people. Engine water (coolant) pump leakage failure has been a leading problem for auto manufactures the world over for decades, and I doubt Jaguar has any more failures than average in the industry since all auto manufactures world-wide use inferior mechanical face seal designs in their pumps.

What's worse, apparently Jaguar's system gives contradictory information (seeing as how it doesn't have a visible temperature gauge). I think I read on the XK forum that one guy with a 5.0L had an engine overheat, and all the screen displayed was an intermittent message about "low coolant" that went away after a few seconds. Never a mention of overheating!

Yes the gauges are NOT the best..!

Does anyone have any recommendations on what is the best make of Water pump to preventatively replace with?

Quietness, I would start with something like this:

Jaguar Land Rover Cooling System Replace Upgrade Kit 5.0L V8 Superchar – Euro AMP (euro-amp.com)

Now, this kit I think is missing 2 peices if I remember things correctly. The first is a little nipple that comes off the back of the water pump that links to the oil cooler. This kit seems to have a plastic piece, I would say to get the aluminum one if possible. The second piece is the crossover tube (looks like a big U pointing down in the Euro pic). That piece also is now available in aluminum. You upgrade these parts, your motor will be almost bullet proof and should give you lots of miles of care free operation.

Many thanks, I agree with all of that, Thermo. Except perhaps, I have read the Euro Amp water pump is not very good? - so I was wondering what manufacturer of replacement water pump would be the very best? Also it seems thanks to our friendly poster in Australia that my car (2013!) may well have the new pipes already (no seam on the main front plastic pipe - go figure on a 2013.) So I will re-double my efforts to get the service records from Singapore and see what was actually done to it...

Thanks again...

Genuine JLR.

Back in mid-June of 2020 I replaced the water/coolant pump on my 2012 RR with an $80 GMB replacement GMB part #1442060) from Rock Auto.
(This is the same engine (including cooling system) as our 2012 XJ 5.0L NA.)

It operated fine until late November 2023, when we were leaving a store and my wife noticed a trail of coolant that had streamed from under the RR. I checked the coolant and saw it a bit low, topped it off.
When we got home I looked into it and couldn't find an easy source of the leak other than it was coming from the front of the engine.
after pulling the shrouds, air ducts, and checking hoses I found the source to be the weep hole in the GMB pump.
That was with almost 3 and 1/2 years and a little less than 29,000 miles of service.
Naturally I replaced it with a new genuine JLR pump that I got for $288 delivered (Ebay).

Thank you - much appreciated... And have they, JLR, improved its design since its first non-trivial flaws?
