Default Alternator clutch pulley

Hello everyone-had to get recovery out as all electrics failed etc-the recovery guy spotted the alternator pulley vibrating like crazy and very noisy. I’ve sourced a new pulley and aux belt but is it an easy fix or do I need to remove the alternator. Ideally I’d like to do it from the top? Ideas and thanks in advance

Hello,

Please check that the alternator bearing haven´t failed too. Remove belt and rotate alternator by hand. If you feel play or rough running, you might want to change whole alternator.
I havent changed the pulley for Denso alternator used on XJ 3.0D, but been chancing pulleys for others. On 3.0D you have to remove pipes and hoses on front of engine. I think after that there are enough space to remove pulley from alternator. Most diffucult task will be how to hold pulley turning when opening / closing it´s bolt. Old belt with lockable pliers are my best bet for it.

Thank you, I’ll check that. I’m not actually sure how the pulley is attached, I see it is threaded and has a nut shaped arrangement around the outside of the aperture? It’s a mystery to me

Ok, if the pulley have threads, then you have to hold/lock the alternator shaft somehow. Check also carefully if the threads are left hand threads? Please search with "remove alternator pulley" from youtube. There are videos from varios pulley models removing works.
