Anyone's Roof still popping?
#161
Thank you in advance for this Jim. I am working with my dealer right now on this and I want to show them the TSB just in case.
Thats very weird, because mine is the exact opposite. I didnt start getting the creaking/popping noise until it starting getting hot, and the hotter its been getting the more it does it.

My creak happens with the panels open or shut, roof open or closed. To be honest I'm not sure that it isn't because of torsional damage to the car at some point, rather than just down to the roof.

Remember that Jaguar superseded TSB K117v3. So if you still have problems maybe some of these later documents might help?
I know several cars have had a terrible time getting rid of the creaks.
If you do get them fix post back if you can so we can learn from it.
I waited and got a 2014 because of this but I have seen models as late as 2015 complain about creaks still!

If in warranty still then yes this would be covered.
If your car still creaks after the first fix (spacers) was carried out then the second fix to fit the plastic boots (2014 and now the 2017/V2 revision of JTB00368) can be done in about an hour without major disassembly (you only need to unscrew the roof glass, which is not as hard at it sounds). Parts are around £50 if you are out of warranty. You just remove part of the rubber seal from the glass on both sides, fit a plastic insert into the ends of the carrier arms and grease the track the arm slides in and a couple of contact points. A dealer should do it as parts + about 1h labour, so it is not massively expensive if you can't do it yourself.
Both fixes were done to my 2010 car. The first I paid the dealer to do (out of warranty) and it fixed it until winter when it came back just as annoying as before. The second fix I did myself in February this year and so far it has not creaked. I don't know if you need the first fix anymore - I think probably not.
I think the creaking sound is front of the carrier arms knocking or more likely sliding against the roof frame at the front edge as the roof moves during torsional loads. It sounds like it could be rubber sliding across a metal surface under pressure. I could feel a vibration in tune with the creaking, and could stop it by applying pressure to the front edge from the inside. They tried raising the back with spacers to increase the pressure at the front which didn't fix it 100% of the time, so the second fix is to fit an insert which appears to raise the height of the arm in the closed position so the glass panel forces it firmer down onto the rubber bumper when closed. That is probably why you need to remove part of the rubber seal to compensate, although I couldn't work out why because there was still quite a bit of compression left in my seal. My roof was very slightly lower than the front fixed glass part after doing the fix, but within the -1mm tolerance. I didn't measure it prior but I expect it was closer to flush, and as it was within tolerance I wasn't bothered enough to adjust it.

Ugh. My roof has started popping over big bumps. It started doing it a month or two ago but it wasn't very loud and I couldn't tell where it was actually coming from (my first thought was that it sounded like it was coming from the driver side wheel well). But its gotten worse and I've finally put two and two together. So going through this thread, it appears there are four possible fixes:
1. Fitting spacers (big job)
2. Fitting the C2D38990 inserts and greasing/lubing certain areas
3. Rear Glass Panel Lubrication
4. Electrical tape wrapped around where the C2D38990 inserts would go
I think I'll try the electrical tape first.

I just had the roof repaired on my 2012 XJ by an independent mechanic who was working at JLR when the X351 was introduced. He found that my car had the first roof TSB performed, probably while still under warranty. It had subsequently failed. He says that a "better" TSB was released in (I think) 2016, with different washer materials.
The big takeaway I got from our discussion is that this problem is not the roof/track mating, but the track/body connection, if that's any help to you guys. This repair is $25 in parts but 8 hours of labor. Ouch!
BTW, he also answered my timing chain concerns by cold-starting a Land Rover in for chain/tensioner replacement and asking me to compare to the sounds of my car. No mistaking that noise! "If it starts sounding like this, bring it in immediately."

Its incredible to think that the X351 came out in 2009 and it took Jaguar engineers seven years to sort out the roof popping problem ! I would think this problem did more to damage Jaguar sales than anything else. Something must have been learnt, because my XE, which has a very similar opening roof is totally silent, the car has no squeaks and groans at all from anywhere 1

Hi,
For roof popping there seems to be multible reasons. I accidently fixed mine, just by adding some anti-corrosion block stuff (ACF-50) on the places where class roof are sitting with it´s rubbet boots and slowly eating paint off, what leads rust on that area. Mine was not making bad noise in beginning but since i add that staff in aim to wipe light rust away later, the sounds were totaly gone.
Have been quiet since and i just add 2-3 times in a year more that stuff. It leaves slight grease layer on surface and in bonus: The rust have not been a problem any more.
Worth to try before taking spanners out. (my X351 are originaly sold new in Germany 2010 and i saw from service reports that something have been done for roof in Jan 2012)

Thanks for all the references in this discussion - sorry to grave dig this one, but I finally had time to book my car in. I grilled the service advisor to see if their techs had experience with this before deciding to stick with the dealer, he seemed a little peeved that I was asking, but I hate wasting time. My roof popping is still super minor, so I lived with it for 4 years but I finally decided enough is enough

I might try that but mine are not loose or have play.
Got mine back and surprise surprise it's still popping in certain cases where chassis flex occurs (corner to corner usually)
I wonder if Jaguar CRC is still active on this forum, my local dealer is about as incompetent as I've ever seen. Service Director rode in the car after I brought it back in for rework after I gave them replication instructions for the street across from the dealership. They pretty much said they couldn't replicate the pop after having multiple techs and the service director drive it, so I took it back at $0 billed. It will cost me more to go back in and deal with them than it will to just ride it out. Kind of akin to a "can you read" statement.
